    Concerning Hobbits

"On a blank leaf I scrawled: 'In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.' I did not and do not know why."

The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, No 163, to W.H. Auden, dated 1955

The origon of the race of hobbits is unknown. Originally, they were a widespread people found in the North of Middle Earth and down to the Vales of the Anduin. Finally, at the end of the Third Age, many of the hobbits moved north and west and eventually settled down in the Shire.

Gentle and close to nature, hobbits are almost child like. Living off of the land, hobbits enjoy nature and the simple pleasures of live. These furry footed people dwell deep in the sides of hills in their hobbit holes and enjoy spending the day eating, drinking, smoking, gardening and storytelling. And of course have many stories to tell because they live an average of 100 years.

They are little people, smaller that dwarves and no more than four feet tall. Since they are much smaller than other races, especially humans or the big folk, hobbits tend to avoid them. Because of their furry feet, hobbits seldom wore shoes and the soles of their feet are tough and leathery. They have curly hair on both their heads and feet. Their foot-hair is coarser than their head-hair and allows them to walk comfortably without shoes. The hair atop their heads tends to be far softer, and varies, commonly, from shades of brown, both dark and light, to red to even blond. Eye color may range anywhere from brown to hazel to blue and green. The eyes of Hobbits are known for being full of mirth and laughter.

The name Hobbit probably originated from holbytla which means hole buuilder. This name perfectly describes hobbits because of their choice of dwellling. Hobbit holes, although under the ground, and warm and cozy and surprisingly clean. Hobbits dont generally like to leave their homes and travel and they arent very fond of going on adventures.

Hobbits are however very fond of food and tend to eat a lot. They are kind off slow in normal movement, don't hurry, and usually eats (six meals when they could get it) and sleeps very much of their life. Hobbits do they have quick hearing and good sight. The Hobbits are able to disappear swift without any kind of magic. This often looks like magic to humans that don't know how they are able to do this. The real secret is that the Hobbits are living close to the nature, and use the possibilities of hiding in it.
