On Wednesday, July 6, the 14&15 year-old tournament team traveled to Bayboro to take on Havelock  in the first round of the District Six tournament.  Joe Montuori and Corey Holley combined to  fire a two-hit shutout for the defensive heroics.  Josh Thomas doubled in the fourth inning and later scored from third on a catcher's throwing error for the only run of the game.  Newport- 1 Havelock- 0

   On Thursday, July 7, the 14&15 year olds played New Bern.  Corey Holley took the loss as he was unable to survive the first inning, suffering an arm injury and unable to continue.  New Bern took advantage of nine walks and eight errors to score an 11-1 win while collecting only one basehit.  Newport had four hits in the game shortened by the Ten Run Rule.  New Bern- 11  Newport- 1

   On Friday, July 8,  the 14&15 year olds lost to Pamlico County, 10-0, and were eliminated from the district tournament. Matt Tucker and Josh Thomas were the only Newport batters to hit safely in Friday's game and finished the tournament with batting averages of .500 and .429 respectively.  Pamlico Co.- 10  Newport- 0 

   The 13 year old team swung into action in the District Tournament in Kinston on Friday night, having a bye and playing the winner of the 3:00 game between Kinston  and New Bern.  Newport's gametime is set for approximately 8:00 pm at the Fairfield Sports Complex on Vernon Avenue.

 

On Saturday, June 25, the league held the Tenth Annual Tony Hill Memorial Sportsmanship Award Dinner at the Newport Babe Ruth Baseball Field.  On a vote by

the league managers and officials,  C J Rivera of the Custom Floors team was recognized for

his outstanding sportsmanship and received this award following keynote speaker Charles Hill's talk about Babe Ruth, the great baseball player that the league is named after.  The league also awarded league championship trophies to the C M Hill team and presented individual awards to Marcos Fronterotta for the league batting championship and the leader in rbi's.  Matt Tucker was recognized as the leader in runs scored.  Nick Brotzman was the home run champion.  Mason Gomola and Brian Favorite were co-leaders with most stolen bases.  Corey Holley dominated the individual pitching awards, registering the most wins and the most strikeouts as well as having the lowest ERA.

         The league also released the rosters for its 13 year old  and its 14-15 year old tournament teams,  naming Larry Smith, Jr. as the manager for the older team and Earl Fulford as the manager of the younger team.  The 14-15 year old teams plays its district tournament in Bayboro starting with a 12:30 game versus Havelock on July 6th.  The 13 year old team will play in Kinston at the Fairfield Sports Complex beginning July 8th.  The gametimes, dates and opponents are tentative and subject to change.  Prepare to pay an admission charge of $4 per adult, $2 ages 6-16, and under 6 years old, free. 

 

The Best of Three League Championship Play-off Series will be between C M Hill, the first half winner and Garner's Farm, the second half winner.  The play-off began on Wednesday, June 22nd.  Game two is on Thursday, June 23rd and Game three, if necessary, is Friday, June 24th.

 

In Game 1, Corey Holley again shutout Garner's Farm in a pitching duel with Daniel Lewis, 6-0, as each pitcher limited his opponents to five hits. Holley scored the first run on a Robbie Hansley squeeze bunt in the fourth, singled home two runs in the sixth, and coasted home after Josh Thomas' three-run double in the seventh.

 

In Game 2, Matt Chisenhall fired a two-hit shutout to best Mason Gomola and Garner's Farm with a 2-0 win.  C M Hill earns the league championship with a two games to none sweep in the best of three championship series.
