5 Field Squadron History.
5 Field Squadron was formed at Plymouth in 1787 and was designated a Fortress Company in 1886.
Its emblem the - Chard family crest - was adopted in 1888. The crest, an eagle standing on a Zulu shield represent Lt Chard's triumph over the Zulu army at Rorke's Drift and the motto 'Nil Desperandum' (the Chard family motto) has also been adopted - Never Give Up.
5 Field Squadron joined 22 Engineer Regiment in 1993 and completed a 6 month tour in Northern Ireland in the Infantry role in May 1998.
The Squadron deployed with the Regiment to Bosnia between March and September 1999. During 2000 the Sqn participated in a full Regimental Training Year in addition to deploying a troop to support the Lead Recce Task Force during Ex Iron Hawk.
