Our Gift Shop

There is really something for everyone here! It is a one of a kind shop and is managed by Sue McMahan and Betty Holmes. Our gift shop is located inside the old Schoolhouse Museum and carries a wide variety of unique gifts for both children and adults.

Gift Shop Report

By Sue McMahan

On the first monday morning of March, Betty Holmes and I met for our usual work session in the gift shop. We discussed replenishing the drastically reduced stock in the children's area. On Thurdays and Friday afternoons of the previous week we had third graders from Condor Elementary school visit the museum for their annual "Hunt for History." They came with open minds eager to learn and money to shop. We're very happy to instruct in Social Studies and help hone their math skills which shopping provides. New docent Carolyn Luke, and seasoned volunteer, Joe Parez, rose to the occasion. (Hopefully they'll come back again.) By Monday morning it was looking pretty bare in the aforementioned corner. With Doris Lawless's help we perused the catalogues and made lists. This week we've been on the phone so we'll be restocked and ready when the 90 plus 29 Palms Elementary third graders visit on April 1st.

In 2006, Weed Show committee member John Hale, put together a C.D. of music from the 1940s to be used as background for the "Tools of the Trade" themed Weed Show. It begins with "The Lady from Twentynine Palms" by Allie Wrubel sung by the Andrew Sisters and includes 25 songs popular when "we were young." In short, it's full of good singable melodies with performers from that ear. New Board member Les Snodgrass took the copy I acquired and reproduced it. He made 12 copies. In two weeks they were all sold. We've been promised a new supply when this very busy volunteer (he also serves as Vice President of the Board and docents every Wednesday afternoon) can get it done. They'll be available soon.

Our feature table has been changed to celebrate Spring. It includes a new book, Flowers and Shrubs of the Mojave Desert, a sticker book-Favorite Wildflowers for Kids or the young at heart, birds, and bee cards, Tee shirts and various 'Springy' items.
