The Old Woolen Cross

Aged Into Her Nineties
Her Mind Was Sharp And Clear
Crippled Hands And Almost Blind
She Called Me To Come Near

"No One Comes To Talk To Me
I Sit Alone And Cry
I Have So Many Things To Say
Before I Have To Die"

I Took Her Hand And Said A Prayer
And Sang A German Hymn
It Touched Her Heart, She Said To Me
"Oh Please, Come Back Again"

I Would Visit, Time To Time
As If I Were Her Son
And She Would Sing Along With Me
In Her German Tongue

She Told Me Of Her Fear And Dread
A Time When She Was Young
Death, Destruction Everywhere
The Time Was World War One

When She Would Sing Her Fear Was Gone
"I wish To Meet My King
And With My Last, Dying Breath
Sing Praises Unto Him"

She Gave Me An Old Woolen Cross
Her Hands Had Made For Me
She Said,"Oh Please Remember Me
For Soon I'll Pass Across"

Then One Day, I Went To Pray
My Anna Was Near Gone
And With Her Dying Breath She Sang
Her Last And Final Song

Hanging In My Old Red Van
For Everyone To See
Is An Old, Woolen Cross
My Anna Made For Me
