1940.

August.

15th:  Spr F.R. Holman and Spr T. Smith of 4 Bomb Disposal Section.

18th:  Near Hook Railway Station, 6 Bomb Disposal Section of 48 Bomb Disposal Company, were digging down to a bomb, due to its location trains were being held up. The bomb exploded killing Driver Fred C. Gavid, Spr. Arthur Hill, Spr. Ralph R.E. Moxon, Spr Douglas A. Vince, Spr Fred D. Warner, Spr Arthur White. They are buried in Aldershot Miltary Cemetery. L/Sgt W.J. Button survived the explosion.

25th: Spr N. Cryer, Spr W.W. Davies, Driver W.H. Fergusson, Cpl A. Haines, Spr Rabinowitz, Spr W.H. Thorne, Spr J.B. Wisely all of 67/69 Bomb Disposal Section.

25th: Maj W.L. Andrews, GC. Was of 23 Bomb Disposal Section, Buried at St Mary's Cemetery, Taunton.

September.

7th: Sgt W.F Glover and Spr E.A Williams, 52 Bomb Disposal Section.

8th: Spr R.Brady, Spr A.R Bush, Cpl J Linsley, Sgt R.A. Smith of 97 Bomb Disposal Company.

8th: Spr M. Walsh of 50/51 Bomb Disposal Section, buried at Southampton, Hampshire.

11th: Spr L.C  Kirkman, Spr W Luck, Spr G McMahon, Spr T Stringer all of 5 Bomb Disposal Company buried at Edenbridge, Cemetery, Kent.

19th: Spr J.E Brown, L/Cpl J.M Kirkby of 9 Bomb Disposal Section.

20th: Spr V.P Mulrooney, Cpl G. Mundy, Spr L.R Saunders, Spr W. Slater, Spr E. Walker, Spr L. Watts all of 32 Bomb Disposal Section, killed at Great West Road, London.

22nd: 2nd/Lt O.S.S Hunter, died at Mill Hill in his Office when a fuze exploded.

23rd: Dvr J Horne, Spr T Stock, Spr J.L Stubbings, Spr C.R Taylor, L/Cpl S.V Wandsworth of 5 Bomb Disposal Section.

26th: Spr J France and L/Sgt E Moss of 3 Bomb Disposal Section.

29th: Spr D. Osbourne of 9 Bomb Disposal Section, buried at Ashton-Cum-Aughton Cemetery, Yorkshire.

October.

3rd: Lt F.C Jinks, (unit), Spr G.M.K Lewis, 207 Field Company, Spr W. Williams, 24 Bomb Disposal Company, killed at 34 Hazeldene Road, Bexley, whilst steaming out a 250kg bomb.

3rd: Spr J. Orr of 6 Bomb Disposal Company. buried at Belfast City Cemetery.

5th: Sapper D McDonald of 35 Bomb Disposal Company. Buried at Cardonald Cemetery, Glasgow.

7th: 2nd/Lt W.F.J Ash, 2nd/Lt L.W.E Foster, Spr Leslie, H.R Hitchcock,all of 5 Bomb Disposal Company, Spr R.J Lewis,  Dvr E.W Websdale, 207 Field Company. Killed at 27 Connor Road, Dagenham, whilst moving a bomb with fuzes damaged but still in place. Seven other Spr's taken to hospital, three were medically dischared from the Army, due to injuries at this incident

10th: Spr W.A  Archer, 2nd/Lt L.G.W Carter, Spr J.W Cookson, Spr W.D Cubitt, Spr W Pass, all of 2 Bomb Disposal Company, Cpl L.J Sharp 685 Artisan Works Company. A 250kg bomb recovered from the Duke of Yorks Barracks in Chelsea, was loaded onto a lorry, it was decided to move it in the evening to Regents Park, Bomb Cemetery. Lt Carter drove the lorry as they neared Marlebone Road near Madam Toussauds the bomb exploded.

10th: Spr Thomas P Carter, Spr Harry J Edwards, Spr Thomas Renz, Spr George W Simpson, Spr Frank B Wooldridge all of 4 Bomb Disposal Section, formed in Cambridge only days before.

18th: 2nd/Lt A. F. Campbell, Sgt Michael Gibson, Spr William Gibson, Spr R.ichard Gilchrist, Spr Jack Plumb, Spr Ronald W Skelton, all of 9 Bomb Disposal Company, Dvr Ernest F.G. Taylor RASC. Died when a 250kg bomb exploded whilst being unloaded from a truck. This bomb was recovered from Chapel Street, Coventry. Left for four days and discharger placed on fuze. Though to be inert. Moved to safe location when the explosion happened. Lt Campbell and Sgt Gibson awarded the George Cross, posthumously. All are buried in a collective grave at Coventrys London Road Cemetery.

19th: Spr A.A. Atherton of 18 Bomb Disposal Company, buried at Toxteth Cemetery, Liverpool.

20th: Spr J. Walker, of 125 Bomb Disposal Company, buried at Mirfield, St Mary, Churchyard, Yorkshire.

22nd: 2nd/Lt F.R. Martin GM of 12 Bomb Disposal Company. Buried at Cuckfield Cemetery, Sussex. 

25th: Sgt W.J. Cobb of 125 Bomb Disposal Company. Buried at Brentwood, London Road, Cemetery, Essex.

26th: Sgt C.W. Hoare, of 3 Bomb Disposal Section, killed at Kilburn Terrace, Eastbourne also Police Sergeant Dennis Owens.  Buried at Chiselhurst and Sidcup Cemetery. When this incident was investigated it was found that the bomb being worked on was intact with its fuze removed, it was another bomb undiscovered that caused the explosion.

29th: Spr J.E. Brown and Spr L. Fitchett of 9 Bomb Disposal Section.

30th: Lt H.A. Manser and L/Cpl E.L. Wood of 97 Bomb Disposal Section. killed at Hurtmore Road, Godalming.

31st: Spr H. Curtis of 2 Bomb Disposal Section, killed in a motorcycle accident, whilst carrying a message.

November.

5th: L/Cpl J.H. Brown, of 853 Bomb Disposal Company, buried at Upper Cross, St Pauls Churchyard, Cornwall.

6th: Lt D. Adam of 853 Bomb Disposal Company, buried at Yeovil Cemetery Somerset.

6th: Dvr C. Holden of 9 Bomb Disposal Section, based in Coventry died as the explosive fill was being removed through the base plate of a bomb, at Binley Sand Pit. Lt. L. Meynell GM and his L/Sgt were severely woundedat this incident.

6th: Cpl F.J. Lillyman, of 7 Bomb Disposal Section. Buried at Yeovil Cemetery, Somerset.

9th: L/Cpl J. Godley and  Spr H. Parkin, of 12 Bomb Dispoal Company.

12th: L/Cpl C.A. Fosher of 8 Bomb Disposal Company. Buried at Cardiff Western Cemetery, Glamorganshire.

17th: L/Cpl W. Dawson and Spr F. Joyce, of 9 Bomb Disposal Company. Died dealing with UXB at Humber Hillmans Factory, Coventry.

19th: Spr Douglas J. Hurley and L/Cpl Michael B. Thorp, of 5 Bomb Disposal Company. Died at Dellwood Gardens, Ilford. The bomb was found to be armed with a long delay clockwork fuze, which was not ticking when uncovered. It is thought that whilst digging continued, vibrations activated the fuse, three other Sappers were also injured.

25th: Spr N. Hill, of 853 Bomb Disposal Company. Injured at an incident on Hempstead Road, died in the General Hospital. 

26th: Spr R.C Easy, Died in Bristol Royal Infirmary. Buried in Avon View Cemetery, Glostershire.

December.

1st: Lt E.W. Ernest. Buried at Bristol, Canford Cemetery, Gloustershire.

10th: Spr John R. Darsley, 2 Bomb Disposal Company, L/Cpl Cyril B. Lebbon, 32 BDC, Dvr Arthur .K. Hartland, 135 Mechanical Equipment Company, LT K.G. Hope, 725 BDC, Dvr F.G.Horton RASC with 2 BDC. Working at Osterly Park, Middlesex. The only survivor was Jimmy Hulme, who was brewing the tea, all though wounded and hospitalised, he returned to BD work.

11th: Spr S.V. Jarret and Spr T.H. Peddel of 77 Bomb Disposal Company. Buried at Chester General Cemetery.

12th: Spr A. Towler of 78 Bomb Disposal Company.

12th: Dvr T. Howard, Lt G.A.W. Smith, Sgt J. Watson of 9 Bomb Disposal Company.

13th: Capt Michael F. Blaney, Dvr J. Lauchlon,  Lt Richard James, Spr Joseph Maycock, Spr Edward McLaren, L/Cpl Douglas Mills, Dvr J. Pickering, S/Sgt Charles Roberts, Spr Stanley White all of 5 Bomb Disposal Company. Died at 590 Romford Road, Manor Park. The magnetic clock stopper was fitted and the bomb hoisted. The stopper was removed as it was in the way of the lifting strop. As the bomb came into view it exploded.  

21st: Spr W. Birtwhistle of 96 Bomb Disposal Company.
