THE
GEORGE MEDAL.
Awarded to
Royal Engineer
Bomb Disposal.
The George Medal was instituted, together with the George Cross, by Royal Warrant on 24th September 1940. At the time there was a need to reward people from all walks of life. However, it was the intention of the authorities that the George Cross should stand supreme and that its position as the 'civilian Victoria Cross' should not be undermined by the award of larger numbers. The result was that the George Medal was introduced as a 'junior' to the George Cross.
Honorary George Medals can be and have been awarded to citizens of countries that are not members of the Commonwealth.
The George Medal is the 2nd highest, to the George Cross, gallantry medal that a civilian can win.
Criteria
The medal was awarded only for acts of great bravery and was intended primarily for civilians. Awards to the military were confined to actions for which purely military honours were not normally granted.
