P-51B Mustang s/n 43-12216 AJ*U flown by F/O John Ferguson

354th FIGHTER GROUP
"PIONEER MUSTANGS"

Known has the "Pioneer Mustangs",the 354th Fighter Group was the first fighter group to take the Merlin powered P-51B Mustang into combat.  During World War II, Oregonians took great pride in the fact that not only did the group train in Oregon before leaving for combat but also that many of the men assigned to the group were Oregonians.  Flying combat from bases in England, France and Germany from December 1, 1943 until May 7, 1945 the 354th was a top scoring fighter unit with 892 enemy aircraft destroyed (637 aerial victories and 255 ground victories).  It is my hope that this modest effort will help pay tribute to such a fine group of men who gave so much for our freedom.

Standing by the P-51B "Spokane Spook" flown by Art Owen are 353rd Fighter Squadron pilots (L-R) 1Lt Dave Henley (MIA-POW), 1Lt Art Owen (MIA-Evaded), 1Lt Jim Parsons (KIA), Capt Bob Meserve & 2Lt Jim Burke.  Boxted, England February 1944.

This site is dedicated to the memory of Major Don Beerbower and his older brother Darrel. Darrel was quite simply a wonderful person and a dear friend of mine.  He shared with me many special memories of his beloved brother.  Don's loss was something Darrel never got over. But, he also felt that the country Don died for was well worth the sacrifice. B/G Jim Howard said "Don's loss was a heavy blow to the 354th. He was well liked and respected by every member of the group.  He was the finest combat pilot and leader I had the pleasure of serving with during my military career". Don Beerbower was one of many such heroes in the 354th FG.
