I was with the unit in A co. from Belvoir to Nam. Left in Dec. of 67, ten days before my enlistment ran out. Met and worked with a great bunch of guys, would like to hear from them. I was a machinist with the outfit and always wondered what ever happened to my old shop. It was called a set 1, had to haul it with a tractor. Hey! and we built those showers you guys got to use. I must have bathed in my steel pot for months after we arrived in country. Hope you guys enjoyed.

arrived in RVN a 19 year old with no idea of what to expect. i had a number of jobs around A co including mechcanic, parts runner, dispatcher, guntruck rto and ncoic of commo. i was stationed out of engineer hill but worked with the paving train from kontum to dak to and every arvn fire base in between. i extended my tour twice because i didnt want to go to germany and was discharged after 2 years in country. i missed the inital movement of A co from plieku to dalat by barge, but made up for that by taking the road trip of a lifetime and driving a 10 ton tractor down the coastal highway from qui nhom to cam rahn bay. then we traveled into the highlands to a new base between ban me thuot and da lat that the 815 has just established. thanks to everyone involved in setting up this site! its great to be able to contact those who served in my unit and share experences.

After Nam I had about 18 months to go so ended up at Ft Leonard Wood in the MP Company. I got out of the Army in February 1970 and went tocollege. I graduated from UNC Pembroke in May 1973 and went to work for a few years. I ended up taking a 7 year break from the military but in February 1977 I went into the Navy. I became a Surface Warfare Office and served on 4 ships. I retired in 1994 and am presently working for the NC Employment Security Commission. I was in both Headquarters Company and the 643rd Pipeline Company. If you know of anyone who was in the 643rd please tell them about my web site listed below. In fact why don't you'all visit it and say hi.

AT 21 years old in Sept 27 1970 and finding myself somewhere in southeast Asia and not knowing anyone, a person can get real scared real fast. This was in Cam Rahn Bay at the rear detachment for the 815th Engineers. I was in Germany before this stationed in Erlangen with the 4th Batt. 51st Inf. MOS was 11B. So I had no idea what at this time an Engineer was. So the first night in country Charlie desided to lob mortor rounds over our heads trying to hit the air field. A couple of days there and I found myself on the way to a place called Da Lat and Di Linh on a road called QL20. Much to my suprise I did not know it could take 6 hours to go 150 miles (I think it was that far) anyhow nor did I know at this time that I would make this trip a bunch of times in the next year for supplies and mail runs. After arriving at Camp Dillard I was assigned to D Co. 815th. First Sgt was Anthony DiMorino and the company commander was Capt. St.Laurente, Later it was Capt. Chew. I was assigned to Hq sguad, My jobs were many, to list a few,,,I typed court Marshalls and Article 15's for some of the screw ups. I drove a 5 ton dump hauling rock from the Quarry, Did mine sweeps on alot of mornings up and down QL20, etc, etc. I met a few guys who I'm still trying to find. These guys made me feel like I belonged with them. More so than any place I was stationed at during my 5 years in the Army. Webster Madison who ran the Gun Truck "Wild Thing" whom I have had the pleasure of contacting earlier this year thanks t6o Veteran Search. Capt. Bob Eberly whom I've been in touch this year. I would like to find Terry Thibideaux, Ken Mayfield, John Marks, Dale Pryzibilla. and anyone else with D Co. I Want to thank Gunner and John Jones for this wonderful web page. To all the guys who served in the 815th during it's time in Vietnam thanks, I know that you who were there before me helped make my job easier. And I hope that I made the job easier for those who were there after me. I did here that after I left that B Co. was almost overrun after I left in Sept. 71. To all those who lost there life, my GOD watch over your love ones. Those ofr us who made it back, WELCOME HOME and may GOD bless you and your families. Again Thanks For the web Page. Randy Kinard AKA Turtle ADDITION: How I got the name Turtle. In AIT 11B we were unloading a 2 1/2 one day. I'm was 6"2" (still am) and probably 135 lbs (not now) any how I was in the back of the truck with the big green cover and stuck my head out to talk to one of the guys and he said you look like a turtle in the shell. The name stuck with me for the next 5 years. | | |

I joined up with the 815th in July 66 and floated over on the old USS Walker in March 67. I was assigned to Hqs Co. as a wireman, clerk etc... after the year was up I stll had eight months to go on my 3 year enlistment and pulled it a few miles from my home at Ft. Story, Va. I spent 30 years as a homicide cop and retired three years ago. I now work for DOD as a investigator. After reading some of the profiles and stories I thought I would try to find some of the guys and see what they were up to. I remember Harry Brown, Ron Fashion, Spangler and I know others will come to mine.

Served with A Co from Feb.7'68-Feb.7'69 doing jobs as needed. Was 5 ton wrecker driver on Engineer Hill shotgunner off the compound. Was involved with the 2 ambushes in Kontum Pass in Mar '68 that wiped out most of the 585th,70th and 102deuce Engineers. After the second ambush Lt.Harvey,A co CO made me a commo man and in June '68 Capt.Schmidt, the new CO made me commo chief. All kinds of bad things happened that year including watching Puff and a Huey gunship get shot out of the sky during a wicked mortar attack, shortrounded and D Co losing their NCO Hootch to the resulting fire, and with 19 days left before deros a Mogas Tanker exploded next to The A Co Ammo Dump, burns part of the shower hut down and I fight the fire all day long, look like a lobster, get drunk and puke in the new First Shirt's trash can, hell I was Short!
