Paul "Dewy" Dewhurst
Paul and I lived in the same room when he joined the Bty, in Traz for a couple of years and we always remained very good friends.
He was a great bloke. He learned very quickly that, in the company of the Men of Fourth, his boyish good looks were not a help. He took heavy flak and took it well, to the point where I saw him prove that he was a match for it, physically and mentally. I went to watch his back when I thought he was going to take a kicking and ended up pulling him off the fella who thought Paul was an easy target. He was much, MUCH harder than he looked!
Paul joined the Regiment about a year after me and because we lived in the same room, there was a natural, friendly rivalry. BFT's and such were always a little competition. Move it on a few years and we were both up for Full-Screw. I got it, I'm pretty sure on time served. We were in NI at the time and working very closely together and it didn't make the slightest difference to our daily lives.
I thought he was going to get it. And it would have pissed me off if he had. He was pissed off too but we were mates and there was no problem.
He knew, and I knew, that for him, promotion was coming and it wouldn't stop at Full-Screw. Paul was going all the way. He was majorly switched on and I am sure that he would have become one of the youngest RSM's of his time.
Paul died too young, in a tragic accident, in 1993, leaving his wife and his 2 yr old daughter, Dannielle.
Once a Redneck, always a Redneck!
