PRESIDENT
NAME: Mike Winslow CALL SIGN: KI4LMZ
The mysteries of radio have tickled my interest since I was a kid when my Dad bought a simple AM crystal radio kit for me to try to put together. Despite being ‘technically challenged’ (then as now) I managed to get the thing to work to the great surprise of my whole family. I still remember the feeling of amazement when that first scratchy voice, transmitted by the local broadcast radio station, emanated from thin air via that rickety little rig. The crystal set led to CBs in high school, as with many other present day Hams. For the next 35 years, career took precedence over any and all hobbies and Ham radio had to wait until August of 2005 when I took the plunge and earned me Tech License followed by General (with code) in December of 2006. The great thing about Ham Radio is the vast variety of activities that fall within its realm. If you are the ‘nuts & bolts’ techo-geek, the theoretical thinker, the casual rag-chewer or the rabid contester / DXer, there is a place for you. A virtual smorgasbord of activities and opportunities presents itself sure to sate the appetite of all comers. I am enjoying nibbling my way along this buffet line with particular interest in EmComm and some light HF. I have been awarded the honor and responsibility of serving as your WTARS President for the year 2008. It is an honor I am humbled by and a responsibility I take seriously. I pledge to all the members of WTARS to serve you to the best of my ability and to guide this worthy organization into its second half-century of service and fraternity. I am extremely fortunate to have an Officers Corp of talented and honorable men, all committed to the betterment of craft and club, on whom I shall depend heavily.
Thank you and 73, G. Michael Winslow – KI4LMZ
VICE-PRESIDENT
NAME: David Nailing CALL SIGN: KF4JYP
Hello,
My name is David Nailling, KF4JYP, your new vice-president for 2008. I have been a licensed amateur since June 1996 and a member of WTARS since 1996 also. My interest in ham radio was sparked in my childhood days in Union City in the 60's and 70's. My oldest brother was a novice class in the early 60's and there were several hams in my neighborhood growing up. I started my radio hobby back then on the citizens band (back when they were still licensed. My old call was KFZ7762. My interest in ham radio was rekindled in the 90's while listening to the net on Sunday nights on the Union City repeater on my scanner and listening to short wave broadcasts. The first radio I purchased was a Radio Shack HTX100 10 meter SSB radio which I eventually sold to my best friend Bill, KD4QCP. I then bought an HT and a 2 meter mobile and soon became licensed. I have always had an interest in public service as well which fits in well with this great hobby. I was elected vice-president of WTARS in 1998 and then President in 1999. That year ended eventfully when 2 tornadoes hit Jackson and WTARS members sprung into action. WTARS members still are ready at a moments notice today! I look forward to upgrading very soon and getting into chasing DX and contesting and relearning CW. There is a vast amount of knowledge and varied experiences among our membership and we want to include everyone. If anyone has any ideas for club programs or activities please email me at kf4jyp@arrl.net or call 731-499-2494. My professional background is in the public health field. I am a communicable disease investigator for the Tennessee Department of Health, West TN Region. I look forward to meeting lots of new and old hams in the area this year and hope to see lots of new faces at club events!

SECRETARY NAME: Lee Stanfill CALL SIGN: KI4UXR
TRESURER NAME: Philip Julian CALL SIGN: KG4NVN
Hello,
My name is Philip Julian, KG4NVN. I have been a member of WTARS since 2001. I received my "ticket" in June of 2001. I became interested in Amateur Radio after purchasing a handy-talkie from Radio Shack for a different purpose. Since I knew it could transmit and did not want to violate any FCC rules, I decided to get my license. Since obtaining my license, the world of HAM radio has opened many great doors to meet people I might have never had the opportunity to meet. This is a wonderful hobby and has the added benefits of helping many individuals in times of need. WTARS is a great bunch of people with unique backgrounds. My rigs include ICOM and Kenwood radios. My professional background is in healthcare. Emergency Medical Services was my first profession for which I am still active. My medical background spans over 20 years and includes EMS, Medical Laboratory Science, Respiratory Care, Critical Care Nursing and the profession that I currently practice, Anesthesia. I highly recommend Amateur Radio as a hobby that allows many avenues for meeting fellow radio operators who live interesting lives. WTARS is a great organization that strives to exhibit the true essence of Amateur Radio.
