The Secret Slavery:
The Flesh Market
"This is as sick as it gets." —Madeleine Albright
A new form of slavery is exposed — the sexual trafficking of women. Millions of women every year are being sold into sexual slavery all around the world — against their will.
Why is this Happening?
Madeleine Albright blames poverty and greed, and the way women are viewed. In many countries, the value of a woman is based upon the use of her body. Sexual trafficking of women is a 4 billion-dollar business, but the women never see a penny.
How Does it Happen?
Many women and girls, as young as seven years old, are sold by family members or friends without their consent. Drugged and unaware of what's happening, they wake up to find themselves in a brothel. Other women are tricked into it by people who have promised them a better life, or by false ads enticing them with jobs like dressmaking or caring for children.
What Happens?
Once these women are sold into prostitution, their papers are taken from them — they have nothing and no one to depend on. They are held in inhumane living conditions and forced to have sex on call, often up to 20 times a day. The risk of contracting HIV is high among these women.
Filmmaker Andrew Levine traveled halfway around the world with his video camera — nothing prepared him for what he was going to see. Narrated by Winona Ryder, his documentary called "The Price of Youth" contains heartbreaking footage straight from the brothels of India, where women held captive live a nightmare.
"Pictures don't lie. You see a picture, you see a film, you can't say that doesn't happen, because we're proving it." — Andrew Levine
