ChessGames.com

ChessGames.com Online Chess Games Database enables you to access the playing records and games of the Grandmasters.  You can also do openings searches--by opening name or ECO code designations.  They offer kibitzing about games, links to other chess material such as hardcopy books on chess, and you can replay great chess games with a quality java applet.

Bill Wall's Chess Master Profiles - Alekhine -

For a concise biographical sketch of Alexander Alekhine, including "correct" pronunciation of his last name, his life prior to becoming one of the greatest Grandmasters of all time, his development as a chessplayer, his human foibles and indiscretions, and even some short games, this is a must-see site for Alekhine devotees.

Bobby Fischer Fans Web Site -

Memorabilia, best games, photos, books, interviews and more for true Bobby Fischer fans everywhere.

Casesladder.com -

A web site offering multiplayer gaming including chess, and host of tournament and ladder play.

Chess Informant -

When I last played in the World Open Chess Championship at the Adam's Mark Hotel in Philadelphia during a 4th of July vacation, Chess Informants were bulky books, but nonetheless very helpful in preparing for a major event.  Now they're offered on CD's!  For a great summertime deal, get three Informants on CD's for the price of one!

Chess Mentor -

I finally got this link up,and it represents my personal endorsement of this product, and shouldn't be misconstrued as an endorsement by MSN.  I really thought Chess Mentor could pave the way for an American child to get the basics of chess down in a hurry, and progress quickly at an early age.  But people of all ages could benefit from having the "personal coaching" this software provides.  If you don't believe me, then by all means take a look at the reviews posted at their site.  Sorry if I sound a little nationalistic here--I'd like to see another American World Chess Champion, especially since Bobby Fischer abdicated the chess throne.

Chess Today -- The First Daily Chess Newspaper -

Grandmaster Alexander Baburin's endeavor.  He wants you to be able to find chess information fast, without the hassle of investing your own time employing search engines and surfing till you drop.
This publication is available in pdf format, so Adobe Acrobat users will be delighted.

Chessanytime.com -

http://www.chessanytime.com

A chess server based in France,  and the limited seven-day free trial access-before you either upgrade to paying member or are denied access-make this an unlikely site to play on given the current political climate between the U. S. and France.  It has some pre-set blitz time-limits, but you're free to input your own time preferences, and issue challenges to other players, as well as accept challenges from others.
It operates using a sharp-looking java applet, so be sure your system has java capability (point your browser to Sun Microsystems if you DON'T have it-Microsoft no longer supports a java environment).

Chessbase.com -

This site has a lot to offer.  It's a site that relates to chess the way Homebase relates to home improvements.  I have only begun to browse it, but I can tell you it contains chess news, software that can be bought, or even downloaded free!  Right now they're featuring a fabulous biographical look at Mikhail Tal, one of the late great Colossi of Chess.

ChessMate Online Store -

Asource to consider for your tournament supplies -- Staunton-style chess sets, travel chess sets, modern and rare, hard-to-find chess books, a pic of Humphrey Bogart playing chess, and more!

ChessWorld.net -

One of the largest sites, in terms of membership, for playing chess with people from all over the world.  Although basic membership is free, all the frills they offer isn't.  Gold membership is reasonable, and paying for membership will guarantee a lot of "bang" for the buck.

Convekta.com -

A chess site guaranteed to make you feel like a child in a candy store.  It has just about anything a chessplayer could want, and then some!  They even sponsor a chess university.

Game Colony -- Play Chess Online -

My latest link search led me to Game Colony, which seems like a viable alternative to playing chess at Yahoo!, or the Zone.com, or Pogo.com.  It must be a newer site.  It still has some "rough" edges.  For instance, their applet is supposed to be able to e-mail a finished games's score to you, but I couldn't get it to work at all.  Their server seemed laggy, with click-and-drag of chess pieces noticeably delayed.  I'll have to re-visit the site a lot to see if it's always slow.

GameKnot.com - Play Chess Online -

GameKnot.com offers both free and paid subscriptions and enables members to play chess while online in a turn-based environment.  If you don't need to have more than six games going at once, their free subscription should suffice.  If, however, you want to play a dozen or more games simultaneously, you'd be better off with a paid subscription.  Team, league, and tournament play is possible too, and the interface used to keep track of your ELO rating and game scores, not to mention their chess board applet, and many other features has made this one of the most popular sites on the web for playing chess.

http://www.instantchess.com -

This is another great site for playing real-time chess, as opposed to the turn-based, or e-mail style chess.  Membership can be of the free or paid variety, whichever best suits you.  Paid members get frills free members don't, which may persuade you to go for the paid membership.  Ratings can be attained, and they offer match and tournament play.  While games can be viewed in PGN format, there doesn't seem to be a way to have recorded games e-mailed to you directly.  But the copy/paste technique should work ok.
