Justiceseeker; A Sword’s Double Edge
Chapter One; The Downward Spiral
The August afternoon was a hot and muggy one as Edgar Mince stared at the shiny object on his desk. ‘Thank god for air-conditioning’ he thought as he touched the cool steel of the sharp blade. It was a magnificent piece and would make an excellent addition to his private collection of artifacts.
"Mr. Mince sir" the secretary skittishly peeked in the door of the inner office. "Don’t you know to knock?" Edgar growled at the frightened woman. "I did sir; repeatedly" Mildred cowered at his deep voice. "Well come on, I don’t have all day; what is it Miss Herald?" Edgar turned to face the trembling woman. "This arrived for you by messenger" Mildred quickly laid the paper on his desk and scurried out of the room faster than a frightened mouse.
Edgar leaned back in the large burnt colored naughahide chair and carefully read over the legal forms he had been served. Damn Legacy, kicking one of their own out in the streets, and for what? trying to uphold justice anyway he knew how.
The Legacy was on the side of good and evil wasn’t exactly playing fair. If it took stooping to any means to contain the evil forces that threatened mankind then he would do it. Edgar Mince was not sorry for his actions and he definitely would not apologize to anyone for getting the job done.
"Miss Herald!" Edgar roared as he laid the documents on his desk. "Y…yes sir" Mildred squeaked as she entered the inner office. "Get my house members together for a meeting" the tone of Edgar’s voice made the poor woman jump. "Yes sir" Mildred tried to calm herself with deep breaths. "Well what are you waiting for woman?" Edgar barked, seeing she was not moving fast enough for his taste. "L... London called… the ruling precept said the tribunal will start tomorrow" Mildred handed the precept the written phone message and darted out the door as quickly as her shaky legs would allow.
Edgar laughed, the Legacy could go screw itself, but in a pleasurable kind of way he would miss this woman. Mildred Herald added a sense of comic relief to his chaotic life which served him by tickling his funny bone. After all the man did get his main source of entertainment by making others feel inferior, that is why William Sloan's predecessor picked him for the job.
Snapping out of his revere, Edgar stretched his 6 ft 7 stocky body and rose from the comforts of his chair. "I must take this particular piece of furniture with me when I leave" Edgar remarked, locking his office on the way out.
Securing the sword in the safety of his private quarters, Edgar left for the meeting room where his staff was waiting for him. "Glad to see all of you are here" the precept looked at each member of his house. "Let’s not pussyfoot around the obvious; I am sure you all know what’s going on?" "And we don’t agree with the ruling house’s decision" the chief of security expressed his feelings on the matter. "What’s done is done" Edgar smiled at his friend. "Evidently London doesn’t care as much as we do about banishing evil." "You will be missed" the head researcher gave his sympathies.
"Anything we can do to stop this injustice?" the house shrink asked. "We can fight this travesty." "I don’t think so, but just incase, Marlon is looking over the documents as we speak" Edgar glanced at the house counsel who was lost in the legal typewritten print. "As I was recently informed, the tribunal will be moving on this quickly." "How quickly?" the security chief asked. "Tomorrow, but this does not mean business shouldn’t go on as usual" Edgar dismissed everyone for the evening.
Returning to his room, Edgar locked the door and retrieved the sword from the hidden bookcase safe. Making himself comfortable, the soon to be former precept held the sharp object close to his body and fell asleep for the night.
