I realize that ACWP is just a newly formed organization. I am wondering, what services are you providing at this time?
We offer spay/neuter assistance for persons who qualify. We also offer puppy, dog, cat, and kitten placement assistance.
What is the ACWP long range goals?
We hope to eventually have a fully funded animal shelter for Summers County. At this time we are concentrating on animal placement and spay/neuter for all animals.
I am interested in adopting one of your pets. Where would I go to see them?

What is the fee for adopting a pet from the ACWP?
Price depends on type of animal, size, etc.
If I get a pet from the ACWP will I have to get it spayed or neutered? If so, will there be a discount from your organization for this request?
Yes the animal will have to be spayed or neutered and we offer assistance under special circumstances.
My pet had some pups or kittens, I am not able to adopt them out or take care of them. Would your organization be willing to take them?
Yes, under certain circumstances.
I would be willing to use my house as a foster home for one of your pets. What compensation if any will I get for doing this? What is the length of time that I must keep the pet?
There is no compensation at this time due to lack of funds. The time varies for keeping pets.
Our school would like to form a club to help your organization. Can we expect any guidance from the ACWP?

Would a member from the ACWP be willing to come to our group to tell us about your organization?

Do you need volunteers and if so how can I help?
Yes!!! We need baked goods for sales, workers for rummage sales, workers for adoption day! Please call us at 466-6935.
Do you need supplies? If so what types?
Yes!!! We need building supplies for dog houses, fencing, blankets, towels, cat litter, cleaning supplies, pet food etc. Please see our wish list.
What is your adoption policy?
An animal must be spayed/neutered within one month of adoption or in the case of a pup or kitten, within one month of maturity or the animal will be reclaimed by the Animal Center. Also, if for some reason you are unable to care for the animal, you will agree to return it to the center.
Before I get the pet, what shots do you give it?

If I am not happy with the animal I adopted, can I bring it back?
Yes, within ten days of adoption.
What happens if the pet I got died because it is sickly?
Within ten days we will give you a replacement pet or a full refund.
What is the law concerning impounded pets by the Shelter?
By the state law of West Virginia, an animal can be impounded for having either no license or vaccination tag as is required by law. If said dog is not claimed within five (5) days of being impounded it can be sold for assessed costs or otherwise dispose of according to law.
Do you automatically euthanize the dogs and cats after their five-day period is up?
No.
Can the shelter use volunteers?
Yes. Please call (304) 466-6935. Volunteers will be screened to find out if they are sincere about working and helping with animals. Volunteers must have some knowledge about animals.
Does the Shelter need equipment or supplies I can donate?
Yes. We can always use newspapers, food, cleaning supplies, or cat litter. Please see our wish list.
What is the State law toward an owner whose pet has bitten someone?
WV CODE 19-20-9a Any person who own or harbors any dog, cat, or other domesticated animal, whether licensed or unlicensed, which bites any person, shall forthwith confine and quarantine the animal for a period of fourteen days for rabies observation. If such animal is not so confined and quarantine, the humane officer, dog warden or sheriff may cause such animal to be placed in the custody and care of a licensed veterinarian for such purposes at the owner's expense. The penalty for any violation of this section shall be a fine of fifty dollars or confinement in the county jail for a period of no less than two or no more than three days.
Under what conditions can I call the shelter for emergencies which is after working hours?
*Owned animals that are sick or injured must be taken to a veterinarian by the owner/custodian.
*Stray animals running at large after normal ACWP business hours are not meeting the above emergency definition and are not considered an emergency call.
*By law, animals are considered personal property-the same as a car. Complaint of owned animals being shot or stolen are personal property complaints and should be referred to the City Police, the County Sheriff, or the State Police.
*Complaints of owned animals being injured/killed by other owned animals should be referred to the City Police, the County Sheriff, or the State Police for the liability aspect and to the Health Department for the rabies vaccination law.
*Complaints of owned animals biting a human should be referred to the City Police, the County Sheriff, or the State Police and the Health Department.
Is there a law in the State of WV that protects animals that are being abused by their owners?
Yes. If any person cruelly mistreats, abandons or withholds proper sustenance, including food, water, shelter or medical treatment necessary to sustain normal health and fitness or to end suffering or abandons any animal to die, or uses, trains or possesses any domesticated animal for the purpose of seizing, detaining or maltreating any other domesticated animal, he or she is guilty of a misdemeanor, and, upon conviction thereof, shall be fined not less than one hundred nor more than one thousand dollars, or confined in the county jail not more than six months, or both so fined and confined.
In laymen's terms, your animals, which include, but are not limited to, dogs, cats, horses, cows, pigs, sheep, rabbits, chickens, goats, etc., must have:
* appropriate food for the age and size of the animal
*appropriate shelter from the elements, including but not limited to rain, ice, sleet, snow, wind, sun, etc., for the size of the animal
* appropriate amount of fresh water
* medical attention for any and all ailments
