In Memory - Barry Horne

Barry Horne passed away Monday morning November 5th, 2001 due to liver failure after being on a hunger strike in prison since October 21st. Barry was serving an 18-year prison sentence (the longest prison sentence ever given to an animal rights activist) for a two-year animal rights campaign that included using arson as a tactic. A courageous fighter, Barry spent many years in prison for acting on behalf of the animals. In 1988 he was given a six-month suspended sentence for attempting to steal a dolphin from Marineland in Morecambe, in northwestern England. In 1991, he received a three-year sentence for possessing an incendiary device.

Since 1997, Barry has been on four hunger strikes to demand the government set up a commission to examine the use of animals in experiments - the longest of which lasted 68 days.

Horne, who married twice, leaves behind two children and a grandchild, and thousands of supporters.

May he Rest in Peace,a true Hero who died for a cause he believed in.
