ART THEME

You will work with varied techniques, media, and activities in 2 & 3 dimensions. You will cover New Zealand (including Maori) art, craft, design & architecture, influences of European tradition and environmental studies. You will work at a steady pace and keep your work organized. The better you use your homework and class time, the more you will know the flow of creativity and the advancement of your skills.

You will be assessed on your completion and mastery of 4 units of learning.

1) Research: Gathering and generating visual ideas through brainstorming, visual and written notes, sketching, collage and assemblage.

2) Drawing:  Arranging and combining  images into compositions showing  Value, Observation, Line Texture, Shapes. ( VOLTS ) You will also work with colour theory and balance.

3) Development: Transforming of materials and using technique to create dynamic artwork.

4) Extension: Using your new found confidence to boldly take your images beyond the ordinary into the extraordinary.

The purpose of a  theme  is to focus and unify your work. Use it to manipulate, change and influence your environment. Create images with the power to stimulate thought and emotion. Think about the underlying form and use of the objects you draw. Think about who you are and what you want to say.

Add and share your own thoughts on the subject. Personalize the theme and claim it for your self.

1 TRIBAL CAFÉ

Down by the water hole, small communities developed to share in the experience of drinking the refreshing waters and by gathering in groups they could offer each other safety and security from the wild beasts. Rituals became established for optimal enjoyment of experience. They found that by using tools they could carry the waters away and by adding plants and heating the mixtures it not only affected the flavor, but also the way they felt. Certain mixtures might be good for healing, sleeping, energy or conversation. The taste could be adjusted for bitterness or sweetness. For images, think of the tribe and the tools they would use. Hides of animals stitched together or bladders used to carry water. Pottery to cook in or drink, out of. Tools fashioned out of wood, stone and fiber. Tribal patterns and decoration such as Maori, Celtic or the tribal patterns of your own ancestry. Aztec and Mayan civilizations who first discovered the properties of the coffee bean cocoa. Emphasize richness of pattern, invention, images of community and developing of society.
