Atlas Shrugged Celebration Day© in Ouray, Colorado

1957 - 2007 -- 50th Anniversary of Atlas Shrugged

The primary purpose of this web site is to organize and promote the annual gathering of interested Objectivists in Ouray, Colorado* on September 2nd**.

See Msg#1 Invitation to Objectivist Celebration

and Msg#2 Ouray, CO 2000-Sept-02

in the "General" discussion for details.

(The primary goal is to meet face to face, in real life, in Ouray.)

The secondary purpose of this web site is to provide a real, Internet based environment where an Objectivist may converse with other Objectivists in a civilized, constructive manner. This currently only exists in fiction in Galt’s Gulch in Atlas Shrugged.

(The secondary goal is to “make it happen” by attracting and keeping serious Objectivists as members by encouraging constructive application of Objectivism to various fields and personal events)

*Ouray is the town Ayn Rand used as a model for Galt's Gulch.

**September 2nd is the day in 1946 when she started writing Atlas Shrugged.

[2006 is the 60th anniversary]

(The date keeps appearing on the calendar in Atlas Shrugged.)

In a world filled with mundane and irrational "issues", isn't it nice to plan a celebration of Ayn Rand's vision of existence as it might and ought to be?

In  Letters of Ayn Rand, (p509 hardcover) there is a letter to John Hospers dated August 20, 1960 in which Ayn Rand writes:

"Speaking of Atlas Shrugged, I was amused (benevolently) to hear that you chose Ouray as your favorite spot in Colorado. That is the little town I had picked for Galt's Gulch. To be exact, I marked it on a map as the right location, long before I saw it. Then, when I went to Colorado for research purposes and discovered Ouray, I fell in love with it. It is the most beautifully dramatic spot in the whole state, and it's even surrounded by a ring of mountains (though Galt's Valley would be somewhat larger)."

In the same book on page 456 in a short letter to Pincus Berner dated September 10, 1949 she says "... if you ever want to see the most beautiful part of the country, go to Colorado. Frank and I fell in love with it. The next time you boast about the beautiful bay you discovered in Massachusetts, we will tell you about the valley we discovered in Colorado."
