What's New, Pussycats?
They've got sass, they've got style, and they've got what it takes to make it big. They're ATOMIC KITTEN, three girls who can sing like there's no tomorrow, dance like it is tomorrow, and do it all with red-hot attitude. Welcome to the world of the frisky feline three. Welcome to the world of ATOMIC KITTEN!
They're not manufactured from an ad in the back of a paper, they're for real, and what they do is for real. It all started about a year ago when Kerry was a backup singer in a band near Liverpool. It was great, but she wanted more. She wanted her own band to rule the world. She already knew Liz, and soon they met Natasha. They all had a friend who owned a clothing label called "Automatic Kitten", which they used as an inspiration for their own namesake, and… boom! ATOMIC KITTEN was born into a purrrrfect pop trio!
Ten months later, they've got a mega-moolah record contract on the same label as Billie & the Spice Girls, a Top 10 hit in December with "Right Now", a tour with 911, their own sponsorship deal for a chocolate bar in Japan, their song "Something Spooky" being used as the theme song for kids' drama Belfy Witches, and appearances on nearly every telly show in the UK…..including MTV SELECT! (phew!)
But don't let the cute, cuddly faces of Kerry, Nat, and Liz fool you, ATOMIC KITTEN are living their lives to the fullest, and this is their time to POUNCE!
MTV caught up with them in the middle of their crazy schedule, and had a short chat with three cool cats ready to explode to super-stardom! So meet ATOMIC KITTEN, the girls that put the "purrrrr" back into Purrfect Pop!
Ok, first things first. ATOMIC KITTEN sounds like a dangerous but delicate thing. What's it like, being an ATOMIC KITTEN?
Kerry: AAAAAAhhhhhhhhh!
Natasha: Deadly!!
Kerry: Let's put it this way, we were in Japan at our hotel, and we got a fire extinguisher, went into our manager's room, and sprayed it all over, got told off. Then Natasha went off sleepwalking and tore the wallpaper off the wall then we got chucked out.
Liz: But that's been the worst of it, really. When we're not in your face and singing, we're quite quiet and gentle!
What else has happened since you've got the record deal?
Kerry: Well, we've had a Top Ten hit with "Right Now", which was released at Christmas.
Natasha: We've done TV Hits Tour, Smash Hits Tour, school & university tours, all the TV shows you could think of, all the radio you could think of, and, of course, presenting MTV Select!
Kerry: I remember watching Hannah and Rachel (from S Club 7) on Select, and we couldn't wait to do it. Hannah was at the Spice Girls concert, and we hung out all night. It was great.
Natasha: Oh!! The new Steps video, have you seen it???
**at this point, all eyes are glued to the new Steps video, "Deeper Shade of Blue", and the Kittens immediately become salivating tigers over the sudden and surprising appearance of the tanned, mega-buff upper-torso belonging to Steps' Lee…
Would you want to do a video like this, with PVC and all that?
All three: Oh yeah!
Liz: We did a photo shoot for Smash Hits like that, in PVC raincoats and Wellies!
**all eyes are still glued to the video….
Natasha: Oii…There he is, look!!
Kerry: You go, Lee!!!
All three: Aaaahhhh!!!! Yeahhh!!!!!!
**the video finishes, and we've all calmed down now. It was only a video, it was only a video…
So what's been you favourite place you've traveled so far?
All three: L.A.!!!
Liz: Los Angeles, definitely!!
Natasha: It was our first time to America, for all of us. And it was cool to see all these great things that we've only seen in films!!
Liz: It was like, "Ah, yellow taxi"! "Ah! Water hydrant!"
Kerry: We went there to shoot our new video "See Ya", and it was so much fun!
Liz: It was like a bit of a holiday, really, which was quite cool!
Kerry: We got to see Patrick Swayze, LL Cool J, Rachel from Friends, but all by accident, of course!
You've also been to Japan a lot, are you performing there again soon?
Kerry: We're going back to Japan in a few weeks because we're filming a TV ad for our own chocolate over there. This'll be our third time back to Japan, and we love it!
Liz: Then we go back for two weeks for another promotional tour of Japan.
How do you compare overseas audiences with UK audiences?
Natasha: It depends really, but in Europe it's mad! We've turned up at airports and there's been people waiting for us!
Liz: Fans everywhere!! They're mad for us in Belgium!
Kerry: And we're building up a huge fan base here in the UK, so that's cool!
Is this your dream, to be world-wide famous?
All three: Oh yeahh!!
Natasha: Definitely.
Kerry: It's been great, but even look at the state of us, we're just lounging in track bottoms and trainers, lookin' like normal, everyday girls!
You've been on so many tours now, but what would be your ultimate dream tour?
Kerry: To support the Spice Girls would be great.
Natasha: It would also be great to be headlining, with a lot of other new acts supporting us.
Liz: To tour with the Backstreet Boys. They have the most amazing voices, just to listen to them sing every night would be a dream!
Natasha: Some bands back out of big tours because they're afraid to sing live!
But you girls aren't afraid to sing, right?
All there: Noooo, we'll sing anytime!
**at this point, the Kittens break out into an acapella medley of "Right Now" and "See Ya", with belting gusto and all too-perfect harmonies….
Wow! Will you promise to do that on Select?
All three: Too right!
Do you prefer soppy ballads or pop explosions?
Natasha: Pop! Pure Pop!
Kerry: Pop explosions, definitely.
Liz: Soppy ballads. I prefer them, even though they can be depressing sometimes. But they can still make you feel good!
What's your idea of a good party, and who would be on your guest list?
Liz: I'd have my family there.
Kerry & Natasha: No no no, Donnell Jones, Beverly Knight, Dru Hill, 5ive, TLC…..we're really into RnB!!
Liz: Ok, they can all be there!
Any other hobbies besides singing, dancing, and touring the world?
Kerry: Clubbing, going to The World in Warrington…
Natasha: Going to Cream in Liverpool, London Clubs…
Liz: Seeing friends and family, and singing!!
And finally, what's the number one rule for being an ATOMIC KITTEN?
Natasha: Booaakka!
Liz: Yeah! Respect!
Kerry: Keep partying, keep socializing, and keep happy!
