IN THE STUDIO Work is on the way, Summer 2006. | Photography has been added to my work of medium, but is kept not as a major medium that I choose to work in. People often tell me I have an eye for photography, with the placement and positioning of the subject(s) in a photo. A good photograph involves details and skills, more than just a point-and-click. When taking a photo, you want the best view and angle. Technology now has made photography a little more easier with digital cameras, you can see the placement of your subject before you even taking the picture. As an artist, it would be important to learn how to take good photographs, especially if I use the photo's to create fine art. It is much easier and to work from photo's because you can take your time with details, and work on a piece off-and-on. Whereas working "from life," you may have a time urgency, especially when your subject involves people where they have to stay in a position for a long period of time. Photography allows you to choose from many positions, angles, and views of your subject. You can take several pictures of the subject in different positions, from different angles, with different lighting, which will give you a variety to choose from when looking for a picture perfect subject for your artwork. I mostly work from photographs, and the photographs I work from are taken by me. If I do commissioned work, I prefer to work from a photo taken by myself. It is hard to work from photos with bad lighting, bad contrast, bad views, and bad subjects. And I won't work from professional photo's because that wouldn't be original work. In order for my artwork to be original, it has to be photographed by myself. ---B.K. Seevers |
