CHAPTER 15

LOBO'S CHANGE OF HEART

Johnny pulled the trigger.  Click!.

B.J. opened his eyes.

Johnny continued to pull the trigger.  Click!, Click!, Click!, Click!  "I’m out of bullets!" Johnny yelled.

B.J. looked at Johnny hard and hollered back. "I’m out of patience!"

Johnny threw the gun to the floor of the truck.

B.J. rushed across the cab at Johnny with his arms out. He jumped at Johnny ramming his fist into the side of his chest. Johnny roared in pain as B.J.’s fist struck his chest.

Johnny yanked the steering wheel over to the left. The Peterbilt cut across the highway running up against the Kenworth. B.J. lost his balance and fell over backwards onto the passenger seat. The Peterbilt smacked into the Kenworth. The Peterbilt’s side of the sleeper grated along side of the Kenworth’s passenger side door, scraping off the paint and lettering. The Kenworth’s passenger side window cracked and shattered from the force of the Peterbilt.

Jenna gripped the wheel tight as the Peterbilt pushed its way into the Kenworth. Jenna jogged the wheel over to the right trying to keep the truck from being pushed off the road.

The Peterbilt pushed the Kenworth over towards the ditch more and more.

Jenna watched the shoulder get closer as she continued to strive with the steering wheel.

Johnny pushed the steering wheel over more to the left in small jerks. The Peterbilt pushed its way passed the Kenworth. Jenna reached for a small switch on the dashboard and flipped it. The Jake brake kicked on. The Kenworth’s diesel engine bellowed as the truck slowed down quickly.  The Peterbilt drove by in front of the Kenworth getting ahead.

Jenna fumbled with the shift-stick while she tried to get the truck into a lower gear. She put the truck in a lower gear and floored the accelerator. She straightened the Kenworth out, getting off the shoulder.

The Peterbilt raced down the highway.  Johnny worked through the gears on the Peterbilt then reached down beside his seat. He pulled out a knife and held it in his hands.

B.J. sat up in the passenger seat and charged at Johnny again.  Johnny swung the knife towards B.J. He ducked from the knife as it just missed the top of his head. B.J. grabbed Johnny’s arm, pushing his weight on it as he held it against the side of the seat. Johnny struggled to pull free.  B.J. punched Johnny in the side of his face as he held his knife welding arm.  Johnny stepped on the brake pedal with full force. The Peterbilt’s rear tires locked up and skidded on the pavement. The speedometer dropped quickly from the speed the truck was traveling.  B.J. lost his balance and he fell onto the dashboard. He pushed himself back up onto his feet.

Jenna geared down as she pulled the wheel over to the right slightly. The Kenworth rolled along the shoulder slowing down. Jenna looked into both mirrors as the truck trolled the shoulder of the highway.

Bear watched Jenna closely.  She downshifted another gear, bringing the truck to a real crawl and reached for the dashboard. Jenna flipped a small silver switch. The jaws on the fifth wheel opened up around the trailer’s kingpin. A loud buzzing noise ripped across the cab after she touched it. Jenna pushed in the yellow toggle button with the palm of her hand.  The trailer’s tires skidded on the gravel shoulder. The trailer slid off the back of the Kenworth’s frame while it drove slowly along the side of the highway. The lines tightened up as the trailer pulled away from the truck. The lines sprung back from the trailer hitting the back of the sleeper.  The trailer dropped off the back of the frame. The landing gear dug into the shoulder and gouged the ground as the trailer slid to a stop.  Jenna shifted up through the gears on the Kenworth. The truck took off quickly down the highway. She looked in the mirror on the driver’s side and stared back at B.J.’s trailer sitting on the shoulder.  Bear looked at her.

"Don’t worry, Bear. We’ll pick the trailer up after. I had to drop it because I have an idea to help B.J." Jenna explained to him.

Bear jumped up and down in the passenger seat.

B.J. jumped at Johnny again. Johnny fell over in the seat when B.J. pushed all his weight down on him. Johnny gripped the wheel tight

The Peterbilt roared down the highway.

The Kenworth sped up close behind. Jenna moved the wheel over to the left. The truck pulled out and crept up along the side of the speeding Peterbilt.

Johnny pulled B.J. across him and reached for the driver’s door handle. Johnny opened the door and pushed B.J. head first over the seat and out of the truck. B.J. dropped out of the driver’s side.  B.J. snatched for the grab handle. He caught it on the way down. His body swung around as he fell. B.J.’s legs fell towards the ground after he held onto the grab handle. His feet started to drag along the ground as he held on tight. Johnny pulled the driver’s door shut.  B.J. looked up and saw his truck accelerating up along side.

Jenna seen B.J. hanging on to the side of the Peterbilt. The Kenworth paced up along side of the Peterbilt. B.J. reached out with his right arm. He tried to grab for the metal steps on his truck but couldn’t touch it.

Jenna turned the wheel over slightly. The Kenworth moved over towards B.J. The Kenworth’s large wheel whirred loud as the truck went down the highway. The truck came closer. B.J. reached for the steps again. He grabbed it and pulled himself from the Peterbilt. His legs dragged along the highway as he crossed from one truck to the other.  He pulled himself up the grab handles on his Kenworth until his feet could get on the steps. He reached for the passenger side door handle and pulled it. The door failed to open. B.J. pulled it again.  The door still didn’t open.

"The door must be wedged!" Jenna yelled across the cab towards B.J.

B.J. pulled the door with all his power. The door opened with a loud creak. Bits of glass fell from the door as it opened. B.J. climbed into the cab and sat down in the passenger seat. He slammed the door behind him.

"Good thing you were there. I couldn’t hold on any longer." B.J. said as he caught his breath.

"What about Johnny?" Jenna asked.

The Peterbilt veered over again.  The Peterbilt smashed into the Kenworth. Jenna held the wheel tight as the Peterbilt hit the Kenworth with force, rocking the cab.  B.J. grabbed for the dashboard as the Peterbilt swerved away.

"Go!" B.J. yelled at Jenna.

"What?" Jenna questioned him.

"Pass him!" B.J. hollered. "Floor it!"

Jenna floored the accelerator on the Kenworth. The truck burst into speed passing the Peterbilt. The Kenworth raced away leaving the Peterbilt behind.  Johnny watched the Kenworth sped off down the highway.  The Kenworth climbed a small hill and went down the other side putting distance between Johnny and them.

"What’s that?" Jenna asked as she pointed down the highway.

"A roadblock at the bridge." B.J. explained.

Four police cars sat just before the bridge, two on each side of the shoulder and one in the middle blocking the highway.

"Here they come!" Lobo yelled at the other officers.

The officers raised their guns and pointed towards the Kenworth.  Lobo raised his rifle and looked through the scope at the speeding truck.  He paused for a second the he looked through it.  The Kenworth raced towards the roadblock not slowing down.  Lobo peeked through the scope of the rifle and put it down quickly. "Drop your weapons! Drop your weapons! Don’t anyone fire! Jennifer Reid is driving!"  Lobo ran around the police cars waving his arms at the other officers.  The officers put down their guns.

"Get the stop sticks out of the way!" Lobo yelled real loud. "Move it!"

An officer ran onto the bridge and yanked the belt of spikes out of the way as fast he could.  The Kenworth headed into the roadblock flying fast.

"Hang on tight!" Jenna told Bear and B.J.

Bear crawled on the bed and hid under the blankets.

Lobo ran out of the way.  The Kenworth smashed into the parked police car. The truck broadsided the car with full force. The car crumpled on the passenger’s side as the windows shattered to pieces during the collision. The windshield buckled and cracked across it on the passenger side, the front and back fenders collapsed inward along with the doors. The police was dragged onto the bridge by the Kenworth and slid off to the right after being pushed. The police car swung out of the way from the speeding truck.  The Kenworth continued onto the bridge.  Lobo watched the police car he was driving roll to a stop on the bridge.  The truck crossed over three quarters of the bridge.

"Turn around." B.J. instructed.

"You got it." Jenna replied with a smile.

Jenna stepped on the brake pedal and hauled the wheel over to the left. The Kenworth’s rear wheels locked up and skidded on the pavement leaving a trail of burnt rubber behind. The Kenworth skidded sideways on the bridge. Jenna turned the wheel back over to the right as the truck spun around doing a one hundred and eighty degree turn on the bridge. The truck stopped and sat facing the direction they came towards the road block.  Jenna put the truck in neutral.  The engine rumbled under the cab.

"Take Bear and get out." B.J. told her.

"No, I am a part of this too. Johnny has double crossed me and he has my statues. I didn’t come this far to be dropped off on the side of the road." Jenna told him.

"Jenna, our contract is over. I delivered the load." B.J. replied.

Jenna raised her voice while she looked at him.. "Is that what I am?! Just another damn contract!" Jenna opened the driver’s side door and climbed down out of the cab.

"Go with Jenna, Bear." B.J. instructed Bear.  Bear crawled out of the sleeper, onto the driver’s seat and reached down for Jenna. Jenna took Bear in her arms as he came off the seat.  Jenna set Bear down beside her.  B.J. climbed into the driver’s seat. He looked down at Jenna.

"It doesn’t have to end like this. The cops can take Johnny. They are right there." Jenna explained to him as she pointed across the bridge.

"I want one last shot at Johnny before the cops get a hold of him." B.J. looked down at her as he spoke. "I’ll make sure he doesn’t cross this bridge."

Tears streamed down her cheeks as Jenna stood there.  She wiped her tears away with her hand.  B.J. reached for the driver’s door and was ready to close it.  Jenna looked towards him and stood there.

"Get out of here before I say something I may regret!" Jenna yelled at him.

B.J. shut the door on the truck and reached for the shift stick.

The Peterbilt came into view at the top of the hill.

The Kenworth started off.
