Chapter Five

The Asian Connection

"Friends?" Jenna asked as she reached for the cell phone on the dashboard.

B.J. took the phone from Jenna. "Yes."

He dialed a number into the cell phone and it rang two time before a female voice answered. "Hello?"

"Callie?" B.J. asked.

"Yes, is this Billie Joe?" she asked back.

"Sure is, how are things going?" B.J. asked.

Callie answered back. "Well considering we never heard from you since you left. Times have changed. Bear Enterprises went bankrupt in the early nineties. I seen that coming in 1988 but we held on as long as we can."

B.J. looked out the windshield as he spoke on the cell phone. "I’m sorry you guys went out of business. I really thought it would of worked for all of you."

"Don’t be sorry, these things happen. You still have your truck or did you fold?" she questioned.

"I’m driving it right now as a matter of fact. I’m going to California with a load. Where is everyone today?" B.J. replied.

"Everyone went their own way. I’ll explain more later. Stacks and I are the only ones left that are trucking. Where are you now?" she continued.

"We are day or so from California." B.J. replied.

"Still have Bear?" she asked.

"Yeah I do, you know I’d never leave him." B.J. answered back smiling at Bear

"When you get to California, you call me right away. It would be good to sit down with and catch up on things." Callie told him.

"We are going to need your help any ways." BJ explained to her.

"You running up against another rival trucking company again?" Callie asked.

B.J. paused, looked at Jenna and then answered. "Nothing like that Callie. It’s more complicated than that."

"What is it then?" She questioned again.

"International terrorists, five million dollars and three priceless statues that are in my trailer." B.J. explained.

"This is serious. Call me as soon as you get here and drive careful." Callie instructed to him.

"I will do that, Callie. Bye." B.J. gave the cell phone to Jenna.

B.J. looked over at Jenna. "We are going to see Callie when we get to California. She can help us." B.J. said as he drove.

"Help us? We already know someone is trying to get this load." Jenna responded.

"Callie is going to try and find out who it is." B.J. interpreted.

"Alright then." She answered back smiling at B.J.

The rear wheels spun on the GMC suburban as it pulled out onto the highway. It sped off down the highway real fast.

The Asian reached into the back seat pulling out a small remote control toy pick-up truck.  He looked over it and set it down on his lap. He glanced out the windshield and seen the back of B.J.’s truck up ahead.

"I want you to pass them real fast. Get a mile a head and turn around. I want to drop the remote control truck so I can run it into them." the Asian instructed to the driver.

"Will it explode?" The driver asked.

"No, it will send out an electric magnetic pulse once it gets under his truck and disable it. We’ll take the statues and leave them." the Asian replied.  The driver floored the gas pedal. The GMC’s engine roared as it passed B.J.’s truck.

B.J. looked at the mirror on the driver’s side as the GMC sped by quickly. The GMC passed quickly as Jenna looked at it too.

"Is that who I think it is?" She asked.

"You got it." B.J. answered back.

They watched the GMC head up the road.  The GMC’s tires started to skid on the pavement as it made a 180 degree turn right around and stopped facing the oncoming truck.

The Asian opened his door and set the toy truck down.

"Just like taking candy from a baby." the Asian said as he shut the door.

B.J. looked hard as he leaned over the steering wheel. "What did he drop?" he asked.

The toy truck started off heading towards B.J.’s Kenworth. Its electrical engine whirring loud as it sped on.

"It’s coming for us." Jenna clarified.

B.J. observed around quickly. There was a ditch to the left side of the highway and a large piece of farm land to the right that had a house on it with a long driveway. He seen the entrance of the driveway coming up to the right.

The toy truck bore down on the Kenworth fast.

B.J. swung the wheel to the right as fast as he could. Bear and Jenna leaned over as the truck made its quick turn. The Kenworth pulled off the highway going into the gravel driveway. The truck turned short knocking over the mailbox as it pulled in. The mailbox fell over, getting crushed under the trailer’s rear tires. B.J. straightened out the steering wheel as he fumbled with the shift stick getting the truck into a lower gear.  B.J. looked out the windshield. The driveway led towards a large three story house that was white with black shutters on the windows. It stood one side of the driveway. The driveway went on towards a white picket fence. Beyond the fence was a large acre cornfield that went for about 5 miles.

"How do you like your corn?" B.J. asked as he shifted into a higher gear. "Fresh or from the can?"

"What?" Jenna replied.

"Bear likes his corn fresh. Don’t you, kid?" B.J. looked at Bear.

Bear stuck out his tongue.

The Kenworth picked up speed as it raced down the driveway.

The toy truck skidded into the driveway following behind.

"You do know we are running out of driveway." Jenna pointed at the fence as the Kenworth raced towards it.

"I’m aware of that, Jenna." B.J. answered

The Kenworth zoomed passed the house heading for the fence. The truck barreled towards the fence quickly.  Jenna closed her eyes and took a deep breath.  Bear put his hands over his eyes.  B.J. held the wheel tight as he could.  The Kenworth smashed through the fence. The white pickets went flying outwards from the impact. Dirt burst up in a small cloud as the fence ripped apart. The truck rolled over the broken pieces of the fence as they settled on the ground. The truck continued on traveling into the field.

"Here’s the best ride in the park." B.J. told Jenna.

The Kenworth drove into the corn field crashing into the large tall stalks of corn. The truck trampled the stalks to the ground leaving a path behind. The toy truck crashed into one of the pieces of the fence flipping over end for end. It landed on its roof with its wheels spinning. The Kenworth trolled through the corn field at a steady speed.

"At least we aren’t leaving a crop circle." B.J. said

"Very funny." Jenna responded. "How far we going?"

"The highway comes back around just a head of us. These fields do have exits." B.J. reassured Jenna.

The truck drove on when BJ seen a clearing. He started to turn the wheel to the right as the clearing came into view.  The Kenworth drove along the side of the highway. He steered the truck back onto the highway.

The GMC rolled to stop near the broken picket fence. The passenger side door opened and the Asian got out. He bent down picking up the toy truck. He looked at the trail that BJ’s truck left behind.

"We still can catch up to them." The driver said as he looked at the open trail of crushed corn.

"No. I have a better plan, but we have to give them time to get think they lost us." He went back to the GMC and sat in the passenger seat.

"Can’t you email him a virus or something." the driver asked.

"No you idiot." the Asian spoke in a deep mad voice. "That truck he’s driving is over 20 years old. It doesn’t have an on board computer with Internet access. If he had a new truck that is what I would of done long before now." the Asian explained. "I would of had the Happy virus crash his whole truck in less than a second."

"Cool." the driver said.

"Lets get going." the Asian replied as he closed the door.

The GMC turned around and headed back up the driveway.
