The following is good advise from Group members.  If you have advise or suggestions please send it to us so that we can post it on this bulliten board...Mickie McKee

From Chippie

Housing:

My chipmunks love their metal wheels, rope ladders, pipes, lots of bark so they can dig and bury themselves, hamocks, ferret tunnels that you hang from the ceiling, lots of branches for them to climb on and their bird nest boxs.  I keep about 4 in the aviary so they all have somewhere to escape to if they wish.

Noise Hurts their ears:

If keeping chipmunks inside please remember not to put them in a room with a TV as the high frequency waves affects their hearing and you will hear the chipmunks crying out in pain, also applys to stereos and kareoke machines they hate the noise.

Taming Chipmunks:

Taming chipmunks is alot easier if you have a large walk in aviary as the chipmunks usually come over to you and start climbing all over you.  If they are in a normal cage start by feeding sunflower seeds though the bars and they will soon be taking them though the bars , then put your hands into to the cage, hold your hand out flat with some food on and let the chipmunk come to you , when they feel safe they will sit on your hand and feed.  Then you can try to stroke them with the other hand whilst they are eating, talking to them at the same time in a gentle voice.  Never try to grab hold of the chipmunk as this will make them distrust you. Just take things slowly and they will become friendly.  In the UK it is illegal to release chipmunks into the wild and you can be proscecuted if you do so.

Pregnant mothers:

In the wild its not unusual for both parents to take care of the young, however, only having one adult in the cage will halve the chances of the young getting eaten, which is a problem Ive suffered and now as a matter of policy always put pregnant mothers into a nursing cage before they give birth, this way I know the mother doesnt get stressed by other interfering adults and eats them herself, nor do you run the risk of the other adults fancying a fresh meat snack!

Buying Chipmunks:

I would recomend trying to buy chipmunks privately for a number of reasons

1) Its probably cheaper, the Pet supermarkets are expensive and dont pay much for stock!

2) You stand a good chance of getting one that is hand tamed and can be handled

3) The breeder will be able to give you a lot more helpful information than the pets supermarket.

As it happens I am a breeder who lives in the Chester Area, I guess it depends what part of the midlands you live in.
