January 1906

ULLSWATER - A movement of great importance for the touring public was the setting up of a company to provide a daily service of cars between Penrith and Ullswater.  The Penrith and District Motor Service Ltd. was reported to have capital of £5,000. The proposal was to provide services between Penrith and Pooley Bridge, Langwathby and Nunnery Walks. The manager was Mr. Tinkler, of Messrs. Tinkler and Co., Penrith, with Mr. W. Thompson as secretary and Arnison and Co. as solicitors.

PENRITH - Mr. James Graham Mounsey, son of Mr. Mounsey, Luham Farm, Penrith, had passed most successfully the subjects of English language, algebra, arithmetic, geometry and Latin, which were required by a pharmaceutical student. He was a pupil of Mr. James Briggs, Argyll House, who had proved a successful coach, having had no failures. Among his students, in the past, were J. Hunter, chemist, Carlisle; Banks Swinburn, chemist, Penrith; Joseph Cowper, chemist, Penrith; W. Elliott, Pooley Bridge, and W. Priestman, chemist, Penrith.

January 1906

POOLEY BRIDGE - The normal quietude of Pooley Bridge was disturbed when the village received a visit from James Wedger, a tramp navvy, who was found drunk, cursing and swearing in front of the Sun Hotel. He wanted to fight with others who were about at the time, including PC Stephenson, who took him into custody and procured a conveyance to remove him to Shap. He appeared before magistrates, who decided on a fine of ten shillings, but, as funds were not forthcoming, the alternative of 14 days' hard labour had to be adopted.

February 1906

POOLEY BRIDGE - The bride and bridegroom, who were happily married at Pooley Bridge, had the distinction of being the first couple in the district to go to and from the church in a motor car. The bride was Miss Sarah Fawcett, the daughter of the late Mr. William Fawcett, Elderbeck, and the bridegroom was Mr. Thomas Mark, Ellonby Hall. The car, lent by Mr. E. Tinkler, Penrith, conveyed Mr. and Mrs. Mark to Penrith railway station, from where they departed for a honeymoon in Blackpool.

October 1906

ULLSWATER - Ullswater sports, at Pooley Bridge, maintained their reputation as a crowd-attracting and entertainment-providing function. The committee decided to add something novel into the obstacle race, in the shape of treacle buns on strings, one of which had to be eaten by each contestant. W. Spooner, Appleby, won the race. In the local wrestling, Charlie Warwick, Eamont Bridge, added to his successes when he defeated G. Burrell, Penrith, in the final. W. Scott, Steelgate, was the winner of the lightweight wrestling, and Joe Bowman, Penrith, defeated Strong, of Carlisle, in the heavyweight final.

December 1906

POOLEY BRIDGE - The annual invitation dance was held at the Sun Hotel, Pooley Bridge, when dancing was kept up without intermission until 3-30am to music by C. Lacy’s band. Supper was served by Mrs. Jacques in her usual efficient style.

January 1907

TIRRIL - The annual meeting of Tirril and Sockbridge Reading Room was presided over by Mr. H. L. Turner, Tirril Lodge. Mr. Jones, treasurer, reported that nearly £14 had been spent on improving and beautifying the room. Librarian Mr. A. Errington reported that they owned 430 volumes, all by the best authors.

February 1907

EAMONT BRIDGE - It was impossible to save the Eamont Bridge premises of racehorse trainer Mr. R. W. Armstrong from fire. The stables building was composed mainly of wood and neither the efforts of Penrith firemen nor those of villagers could quell the flames.

November 1907

EAMONT BRIDGE - Mr. James Wood, dairyman, Eamont Bridge, a member of the West Ward District Council, had a narrow escape from serious injury when an 18-month-old bull which he was exercising attacked him from behind and knocked him down. In falling, Mr. Wood injured his leg and was at the mercy of the bull, being unable to get up. Luckily his cries for help were heard by his brother and another man, who drove the bull off.

March 1908

EAMONT BRIDGE - Mr. R. W. Armstrong’s horses were out training in Brougham Park when Phyllis, a three-year-old filly belonging to Mr. Stratham, and ridden by T. Harris, shied at a dog and bolted. After going about 300 yards, the animal swerved and dashed with great force into a wire fence. The jockey was thrown into the field but sustained no further injury and a severe shaking. The horse, unfortunately, broke its off fore leg just under the shoulder and had to be destroyed.

POOLEY BRIDGE - The death has occurred of Mr. Richard Bateman, Lowther Street, Penrith, and formerly of Mins House Farm, Pooley Bridge. Mr. Bateman was one of the best known and respected farmers in the district. For over 40 years he farmed at Holiday House, Dacre, and over 20 years ago went to Pooley Bridge. He is survived by a grown up family of five including two well-known local farmers Mr. Miles Bateman, How Hill, and Mr. W. Bateman, Slack Gate, Penruddock.

April 1908

POOLEY BRIDGE - The death has occurred at the age of 91 of Mr. Joseph Hodgson Cumpston, of Barton Hall, Pooley Bridge. Mr. Cumpston moved to Leeming [Watermillock] on the shores of Ullswater in 1854 and in 1863 purchased and enlarged Barton Hall, where he had since lived. He took an active interest in parish affairs and was one of those responsible 30 years ago for the erection of the church at Pooley Bridge. With other local gentlemen he also helped in having the telegraph service extended to the village.
