WALSALL UK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our motto: "Walsall - not as bad as you'd think..."
Walsall lies in the Black Country which in turn
is situated in the West Midlands of England.
Walsall is situated in the heart of the West Midlands at the centre of Britain's industrial heartland which is sandwiched between Wolverhampton and Birmingham.
The next nearest largest city in Birmingham...hence the name BRUMMIES, as in Scouser ... Liverpool and Cockneys... London ( their local dialect, in other words )
 | The earliest reference to Walsall is in a will dating back to 1002 which refers to a place called "Walesho". The name Walsall is believed to date back to the Old English "Wealhs Halh" and probably means "the land belonging to Wealh" The medieval town grew up in a cross shape, with the highest point, Church Hill, standing 511 feet above sea level. A church has stood on the hill since at least 1200 and the present St Matthew's Church still contains a 13th century crypt. Walsall's economy still relies heavily on metal-based engineering companies and the town has a high concentration of firms manufacturing leather goods and saddlery - so much so that Walsall can justifiably claim to be "The Leather Capital of Britain". The strong evidence for this claim can be seen at the Leather Centre Museum, which was nominated "Industrial Museum of the Year" by National Heritage in 1990. |
| Like many other towns, Walsall underwent much redevelopment in the 1960s, and many of its finest buildings were demolished or fell into disrepair. However, Walsall has a strong conservation lobby and many parts of the town are preserved in conservation areas. The most famous Walsall resident was the author Jerome K Jerome who was born in Belsize House, Bradford Street, in 1859. There is now a small museum on this site. Also famous in her time was Sister Dora - born Dorothy Wyndlow Patisson in Yorkshire in 1832. Her pioneering work with the sick and needy of Walsall earned her national respect. After her death in 1878 she became the first non-royal female to have a statue erected in her memory.
Well done ellie. I'm very impressed. As a matter of interest, Wolverhampton got it's name from a Viking settlement (HAMPTON), governed by WULFRUNA, a Viking Princess. Nearby are WEDNESFIELD (field of WODEN, a Viking God - a battle was fought there) and WEDNESBURY (WODENSBURY). Walsall is also WORLD famous for it's illuminations.. click HERE |
