I joined Toastmasters in 1998 because I felt nervous when talking in front of a large group of strangers, and that didn't reflect the person I thought I was. I spoke well one-on-one, but something about groups...
Many people have this same problem. I heard about Toastmasters, and they met at night, perfect for me after work. I've been there ever since because I continue to improve. I'm even considering trying to make it as a professional speaker!

Joining Toastmasters is the best decision I've made for self improvement. It has allowed me to conquer my fear of speaking in front of people. And it taught me something I didn't expect - leadership skills. I remain in our local club because I enjoy the positive, supportive atmosphere. Toastmasters has helped me excel at my job, and as a church leader."

I work in public affairs for the North Dakota Army National Guard. Mostly I do photography, writing, and editing, but occasionally I give briefings. For that, and just in case I ever had a TV camera in my face, I wanted to be a good speaker.
Toastmasters has enabled me to reduce my fear of giving speeches to a minimum. It has provided me with a workshop to practice briefs I plan to give and to practice using audiovisual equipment. It has also given me practice in running meetings. If I ever need to emcee an event, I could do it.
