Black Hills Hiking
Peaks of the Black Hills—6000 Feet & Above
Copyright 2002-2007 Travis N. Wood

Listed below are peaks or summits that rise to 6000 feet elevation or more. The list is somewhat arbitrary in that there are a few locations where "groups of peaks" appear near together but only one is granted the distinction of a place name and listing here. That is the case with the Warren Peaks in the Bear Lodge Mountains. A few could be listed. We chose to list only Bear Lodge Peak.

We took a similar approach west of Copper Mountain. There several hills upon the limestone rise above 7000 feet. We could have listed half a dozen of them. We chose instead to list the highest one, a "Green Mountain," not accorded a place name on most maps, at 7164 feet. These summits are directly west of Copper Mountain about a mile or two.

Obviously, some of the more distinctive peaks of the Black Hills are not here listed. Crow Peak and Spearfish Peak are examples. Though they do not rise above 6000 feet, they dominate many perspectives in their domains. But as we said, the list is somewhat arbitrary, and we may consider how we may in the future make it more representative of the Black Hills skyline. For now it represents the highest elevations.

The peaks are listed in order of elevation. Links are to topographic maps at TopoZone.
