                          The  Cinema

I am unabashedly a movie buff.  Altho' I scarcely go to movie theatres nowadays, I watch an average of 12 movies every week at home on rented or bought vcds/dvds and on StarMovies TV channel. Some are repeats - old ones I had watched in the past; others old but hadn't watched before, and of course a lot of new ones.  Here are some of my favorite movies.  Have you seen them?  Did you like them?  I did!

Gone with the Wind  I was mesmerized by Scarlett O' Hara portrayed by Vivien Leigh.  All of a sudden, I wanted to be part of that time in Georgia, Atlanta, living in Tara, attending the balls. For some magical, crazy time, I'd look at myself in the mirror and saw Scarlett there! Soon after, reading the voluminous novel was like a journey back to the South.

The Sound of Music I saw this movie repeatedly, without feeling any less thrilled each time. My sisters and I knew all the songs by heart and could sing all of them by heart with one sister accompanying us superbly at the piano.  We were the toast of our neighborhood for that. We sure did Dad and Nanay proud!

The Ten Commandments  One scene I can't forget : the parting of the red sea. The genius of the computer was yet unheard of that time, so I was like all other viewers who were awed by the marvel of that particular scene. I became ' saintly ' for a time after watching the movie.

Kramer vs. Kramer Kramer Versus Kramer This is where I fell in love with Meryl Streep for the first time. I loved her in that court scene where she reportedly changed the script and incepted her own  to give way to what she truly felt as the words coming from her character in that particularly delicate scene.

Great Expectations  Great Expectations  Guess I was sublimely affected by Robert De Niro's character - the unexpected humanness in him; the paradox of Man.

Forrest Gump  A truly absorbing story; a superb characterization by Tom Hanks. I was especially taken with that scene where Forrest Gump reveals his feelings for his lady-love.  The internalization of the role was such that one forgets Hanks was acting.

In America ( tugs at the heart )

Swimming Upstream ( the 'get real' scenes that raised some questions )

Jet Lag ( Juliette Binoche is enchanting!)

Scent of a Woman (   Al Pacino at his finest )

A Love Song for Bobby Long  ( sweet, heart-filling )

Pieces of April ( Patricia Clarkson as the Mom is heartbreakingly true )

Legally Blonde, Part 1  A favorite 'feel-good' movie; really tickled my funny bone; and I saw some things there I could easily connect with - feminine vanity, the vibrant sense of self, the dogged determination that keeps the adrenaline going.

The Odyssey  It reacquainted me with Homer's literary epic; finally, I got a grasp of details... and names, yes! Now I understand this present-day fascination with Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and other sci-fis. One just has to have a fertile imagination and the guts to weave a magically incredible tale. By the way, I loathe science-fiction films.

The Godfather, Part 1  This may well be the most acclaimed film about  organized crime, the Mafia, godfathers and vendetta.

The Exorcist  As they say, it's the scariest movie of all time! I agree. Never mind if my nights and days were haunted by the movie's visual effects: the spider-walk down the stairs, the levitation, the 360-degrees head turn, the gooey greenish spit, etc.

Annie Hall  For the realities of coupling ...Allen's monologues are hilarious and thought-provoking as well ... strike home.

A Walk in the Clouds  They don't make movies like this anymore. Sigh!
