Welcome to Boy Scout Troop 5. Our Troop was established in January 1990.
Scoutmaster Jim S. began the Troop with six scouts. We are co-sponsored by St.
Anthony of Padua Parish and The Knights of Columbus – Father Thomas A. Judge
Council 6893.

We have written this handbook to provide parents with a better understanding of
some of the activities and actions necessary in running the Troop.

CALENDAR

The Troop distributes a calendar of meetings, events and campouts in September
listing all planned activities for the upcoming year. Although we plan activities
early and create a calendar, there are occasions when the original dates may
need to change.  All changes will be communicated to the scouts. You may verify
dates with us as well.

Several scouts have created and maintain a Troop 5 web site.  This site is utilized
to post all activities, dates and Troop 5 news.  We recommend you and your scout
access this site and join the mail-list at
http://www.Troop5EastNorthport.org to stay on top of all Troop functions.

WEEKLY MEETINGS

Weekly meetings are held Wednesday evenings at St. Anthony's Parish Hall (gym).
They begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and we ask the Scouts to arrive by 7:15 to
resolve any administrative functions and be ready to commence the meeting on
time. Parents are welcome to stay and observe the meetings.

The Scouts are expected to be dressed in full Class A uniform (Scout shirt-
including appropriate insignia, Scout pants, Scout belt, and Scout socks - when
wearing shorts) for all meetings, functions, and campouts. We have some veteran
uniforms available for the new Scouts who need them. Note: We ask any older
Scouts to donate outgrown uniforms back to the Troop.

The Scouts plan and run the meetings. The Senior Patrol Leader is in charge. He
has an assistant and several patrol leaders to help him. The adult leaders are there
to supervise.  The meetings generally entail a demonstration, a patrol corner,
patrol competition, and a game.

We try to end the meetings promptly at 9:00 p.m. Please try to be prompt in
picking up your sons. This is a school and work night and everyone needs to get
home.

CAMPING

We camp almost every month including January and February. The dates and
locations of each campout are listed on the calendar. We routinely leave on Friday
evening at 5:00 pm from the Parish Hall parking lot. Please have the boys there at
4:45 pm so we may take attendance, assign cars, and distribute a phone chain
while still providing us the ability to leave at 5:00 pm. The boys should bring a
bagged dinner to eat on the road or at the campsite.

We ask that parents take turns driving to and from campsites. The patrol leader is
responsible for arranging rides for your son's patrol, so let your son or his patrol
leader know when you will be available to drive throughout the year. Most
campsites are not local (about 1 1/2 - 2 hours away) so we need all the
transportation we can get. Maps will be available from one of the adult leaders.
Maps, directions, and location phone numbers will be posted on the web site as
they become available
