Had first aneurysm (left posterior communicating artery) 4 hr.surgery by clipping 1-24-03, followed by a CSF leak "repair" on 1-31-03. Had 5 hr. coiling on 3-4-03 for second aneurysm -on malformed basilar artery, with 20-30% chance of success - and it was filled 90%!!  I didn't fully appreciate the seriousness of my condition and how very blessed I am until finding out about the basilar artery aneurysm.  God is good & I have the best drs. on earth!!!!! /// Three weeks after my coiling my 34 yr. old daughter was found to have an 8 mm MCA!!!!!  She was in the hospital for a pulmonary emboli and was having dizziness and they did an MRI and discovered the aneurysm.  When she had her surgery they said the walls of the annie were very thin with many bulges, so we are so very, very blessed it hadn't ruptured -especially since she is on a blood thinner!!!!!  Our Guardian Angels have been working overtime.

I don't really know if hers was clipped or coiled. I asked her about it but I think is was too soon because she couldn't really tell me. She wants to ask her Dr. whenever she goes for her postop check-up. I also don't know if it was leaking or not. Could that have caused her "worst headache" because that came all of a sudden.
I would appreciate anybody's input on this, since I'm really trying to find out what exactly happened and how.

Scott suffered an SAH just after midnight  as he was laying down watching t.v. He insisted he had twisted his neck and would not go to the hospital until 6:30 am on the 4th where they discoved he had an aneruysm burst. (because of his sister he later claimed he KNEW what it was and thought I could use a good nights sleep!)

Scott had his annie clipped on the 5th of Jan, it was in the left front temperal lobe behind his optic nerve.  Physically he came through great but his short term memory is almost non-existant and there seems to be a lot of confusion yet his personality and sense of humour are much the same.  On  the 26 th of Feb 2001 Scott's sister had an aneurysm bleed she was operated on the 2nd of march and died 12 days later,  we know how lucky we are.

I had a Subarachnoid Hemorrhage/Internal Carotid artery aneurysm. It ruptured on 11/8/02, and operation was 11/9. The doctortold my husband that Ihad a 30% chance of making it through the operation. I like the   icon because that is what the Surgeon signaled  to my husband through a window after my clipping.  After the 3rd day I fell into a "sodium deprivation" for a few days and from what I understand this is another coma-like dangerous situation.  I was in the hospital about three weeks, until 11/26/02. During Dec. & Jan I was recovering home but so very tired. At the end of Jan. I started to get some energy back.I discovered the BAF message board right before it went down.  I went back to work on 3/6/03, 3 days a week, part-time for now. I am very blessed and lucky  to not have major side effects from this. I am seeing a neurologist for left arm/hand weaknesses but I sure can live with that.

I am a 44 year old mother of 5 children, I had a craniatomy (clipping) on the ruptured aneurysm back in April 2002.  I am still suffering from fatigue, short term memory loss, HEADACHES AND MIGRAINES, which are all supposed to be normal after having a brain surgery.
I had just seen my neurosurgeon (Professor) last Thursday regarding the mirror image unruptured aneurysm.  According to the CT scan the aneurysm did not grow, so I'll be having an MRI in October, 2003 to check it.  I can't have anymore CT scans because I am allergic to the contrast (idione) they use for the scan.  The neurosurgeon thinks it should be left alone for now because it did not grow.  He assured me that I am in no danger.  But how come I don't feel that.  I really do trust him, but I need to hear it from another neurosurgeon.  I am thinking about doing that soon, but I need encouragement from someone to do so.  I haven't told anyone in my family.  I don't want to be a burden on my husband and children.

May 14, 2001 I had a headache that got very bad, stayed home all day until family took me to hosp.I had made a phone call that morning to family members that saved my life and I don't recall making it. CT scan revealed an aneurysm, I was helicoptered to Will's Eye Neuro Unit in Philadelphia, Pa to Dr. Robert Rosenwasser. I hardly remember a thing that first day. They stabilized me that night, on May 15 the Dr. placed 3 coils to seal the aneurysm, spent about 8 days in NICU, a few in ward then sent to rehab hosp for a week. They sent me back due to a dilantin allergy reaction. Finally went home June 9 and returned to work Sept. 15. After an angiogram in Nov. 2001 and a MRI/MRA in January 2002 my aneurysm was leaking (not life threatening) and Dr. suggested a clip. I had it clipped May 20, 2002, returned to work Sept and feel fine ever since, no problems at all. I'm very lucky

I had aneurysm surgery in April. I had no systems of it, never knew I had one. My eye doctor did not like the results of my visual field test and sent me for a MRI. He was looking for a tumor, there was no tumor but they found the aneurysm in my head. Five years ago, the eye dr. (different one) that I was going to did not like my test results and sent me for an MRI, the radiologist that read the test said everything was normal. I took the old & new MRI to the neurosurgeon and guess what, the aneurysm was there 5 years ago. It was smaller but it was there. I was very luck. I came through surgery great. They had to shave my hair but it is growing back. I had no bad effects from the surgery. They say you can have short-term memory loss or a stroke, etc. Again, I was very lucky. I was out of work for 10 weeks. I am back to work now and doing great. You never know what is going on inside you.

My nightmare started as a severe pain in my neck that rapidly became my worst headache.  Went to a clinic that gave me pain killers and sent me home.  2 weeks later I was finally referred to our Urgent Neurology Unit at the fabulous Foothills Hospital who immediately admitted me and did the angio.  I was fortunate that I didn't have a full rupture but rather a leak that sealed itself off.  The artery was clipped by Canada's first FEMALE neurosurgeon!!  Was feeling good until my car door episode which required a second operation.  I have only minor deficits that seem to only appear when I am very tired (get stuck on words sometimes and left & right).

On November 24th I was working out, and apparently said that I didn't feel well.  I had a seizure and fell off of the elyptical trainer (machine) and the ER doctor who just happened to be exercising behind me kept my oxygen levels up until EMS arrived.  I was airlifted to Stanford Hospital, and a couple of hours later my neurosurgeon, Dr. Steven Chang, performed a craniotomy and clipping.  The aneurysm bleed caused a Level 4 SAH and I was in ICU for 3 days, and the neuro ward for 13, for a total of 16 days in the hospital.  I had vasospasms until the day before I was discharged, and apparenlty was close to death for a long time.  I don't remember most of the week before or the time in the hospital.  After I got home from the hospital I had another petit mal seizure and went to ER.  They had had me on Dilantin, and then after the second seizure put me on Depakote.  I had a severe allergic reaction (hallucinations, additional pain, and full body skin rash), and another ER visit about 5 days later.  I was changed to Keppra, which has seemed to work, at 2000 mg per day.  I have had terrible headaches since the operation, but within the last 2 weeks I have seen some relief.  I have been up walking since I returned home from the hospital, and am back at the gym 4 times per week, with lots of physical gardening, other walking and hiking, etc.  I vary reading, exercise, eMail, housework, bill paying, etc. as mental and physical exercises to get me back into health.  Before my rupture, I was a executive/director with HP, in great physical shape, low blood pressure, great health.  Since my rupture I have not returned to work (expect mid-June return) and even with all the exercising I do my stamina is not great.  I have seen my neurosurgeon 3 times since I returned from the hospital, a neurologist once, a neuroopthalmologist for my right eye problems, and a neuropsychologist to determine cognitive deficits.  I also see an occupational therapist 1-2 times a week.

View the details of this row. Maggie Ingle St. Louis Park, Minnesota - suburb of Minneapolis June 2002 Basilar tip aneurysm   Coil August 2002. After having headaches almost everyday for about 10 months, and migraines coming closer together, I had an MRI for a possible pituitary gland problem. The radiologist spotted the aneurysm. After 2 months of doctors, tests, and pure hell, I had a coil in August 2002. The surgery itself was pretty uneventful, but I awoke from anesthesia with painful muscle contractions in my neck and shoulders which were actually worse than the headache. I stayed home from work after coiling for 2 weeks, and then about 10 partial days. I had lots of trouble with dizziness and poor equilibrium. For a couple of months I sometimes had what I called floaty head. It was different from dizziness--just a floating feeling. Any "middle-aged' forgetfulness that had already started was exaggerated, but not so that I couldn't function. After a couple of bad headaches, eventually my GP sent me to a neurologist. My original surgeon is a brilliant and skillful doctor, but not great on the follow-up parts. The new neuro worked with my surgeon and determined that my headaches and muscle spasms were myofascial and related to fibromyalgia, both of which are neurological in origin. I started physical therapy for the muscle problems. In early December I had a TIA with double vision & numb lip which lasted about 20 minutes. I had another MRI and was told that there were tiny blood vessels re-routing in my brain, my brain is on overload, etc. and it will take time for healing. I was put back on Plavix & aspirin. I had my follow-up angiogram in April which showed that the coils are in place and there is no blood in the aneurysm. Abbott Northwestern Minneapolis

I cleared out our local Huddle House on a Friday night. I guess if someone was in the floor throwing up in trash cans, praying out loud, and dying by the minute, I would have left too. That was the worst day of my life, but the beginning of my second life. I am not the same, but maybe I'm better in the important ways. Love of God and family are at the top of my list now. That's whats important.

I first felt that something was wrong on August 17th'02, I was at my 20 year grad reunion. It was like someone had to the volume off on the room for about 30 seconds, then I got very dizzy (dropped my drink, which everyone thought wow how much has she drank? For the record it was my second drink) I went to the hospital(in Victoria) and was sent home saying I had a headache(oh really I think thats what I told them) I came home 3 days later, thinking I had just wrenched my neck, so I went to my chiropractor he would not touch me (thank god) I went to my family docotor and he also knew right away that something was seriously wrong, he said he knew then but didn't tell me. I was sent for tests at our local hopital and then sent right away to Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminister,B.C. where an angiogram was done to discover I had 3 aneurysms( I always do things big) surgery was performed the next day and I came out of it great more or less. Hey thanks for letting me go and on. Stacey

I had a rupture in January 2002 with big headache, etc.  I felt a bit better the next day but kept getting a"migraine" and stiff neck.  Doc thought I had the flu but I persisted and finally after a week since the initial rupture, I went to the emergency room and found the basilar artery aneurysm had ruptured and they life flighted me to Allegheny General.  They inserted 19 coils and I stayed in the hospital for a week.  I was fine but had some short term memory loss and lost my hair due to an allergic reaction to the contrast dye.  I stayed home for a month before returning to my job as a first grade teacher.
I went for a followup in August and they "said" everything was ok but when I went in January again for an angiogram, they said that my aneurysm had grown but they noticed it in August but didn't say anything.  So it had grown some more.  In February they inserted 6 more coils.  They are going to take a look at it again in 2 weeks (May) so wish me luck.

Got sick at work on a Friday.  Didn't remember this till much later, but my legs went numb and I fell on the floor, had the worst headache of my life along with nausea and vomiting.  Spent 3 hours in the Med Dept at work and dr released me to home.  I found someone to drive me home and spent the weekend in bed.  Admitted to the hospital on Monday.  Spent 4 days in the hospital and after many tests was diagnosed with spinal meningitis and released to home.  4 days later woke with my left eye closed and fixed and dilated.  The local ER did an angio and found the ruptured annie along with 2 more unruptured annies.  After 5 hours of trying to find a hospital that would accept me (none had any beds), I was airlifted to U of Illinos Medical Center in Chicago where the coiling was done on 10/17/2002.  Several days later I developed vasospasms and angioplasty had to be done.  Then developed pressure in the brain and had to have a "brain drain" for several days, but pressure resolved.  I spent 16 days in the hospital, most of it in ICU.  The only memory  that I have is the ICU psychosis - I had it really bad.   I've been home recuperating since, am on long term disability from work.  My followup angio and coiling on remaining annies is 5/8/2002. Additional coil was placed in ruptured annie and the larger of the 2 annies was coiled.  Remaining annie is too small for coils - chance of rupture is 1 in 1,000.  It took my eyelid almost 3 months before it would open and stay open.  I still have double and blurred vision as the eyes are not tracking with each other. I am on 400 mg of Dilantin, Plavix and baby aspirin.   It has been a very difficult time, though, as I no longer have my position at work that I held for 24 years and I haven't been able to drive since I got sick.  I apologize for the content of this message as I know I am jumping back and forth to explain my surgery.  Sorry about that.  I am so thankful to be alive and owe it all to God, my neurosurgen, my significant other for putting up with me and family and friends for praying for me during this difficult time.  I am so thankful this board exists and all the new friends I have.

My friend Mary had an angiogram done on March 1 2003. Her doctor found an aneurysm in the shape of a four leaf clover. They had to perform an emergency coiling. She was scheduled for a follow-up angiogram on April 8 2003, but had to cancel because she is allergic to the dye. Finally had it done on April 15 2003. Her nerosurgon found that the coiling procedure is leaking. She will see her doctor on May 9 2003 to see what the next step will be. Mary and I are so grateful for this group. We are learning so much.

  1. I passed out on July 11 at 1:30 a.m. and woke up about 45 minutes later in my kitchen in a  pool of water and blood, from my fall on the floor.  Didn't know what was going on, afraid I was having a brain stroke like my older sister 10 years before.  I had to crawl to my bedroom when the dizziness stopped and I took a shower and saw the wound on my head.   I did nothing when I was going okay without no dizziness.  Yet for that week I was having problems with my right side, no strength at all.  I knew I  had had a small hemorraghe a few years before but unfortunately did nothing to go to see a doctor.   Then one morning I had no strength at all and wanted to pass out so went to an Emergency Room.  Luckily there was a neurologist there and asked me questions.  I told him about my sister and he made me take a C-Scan.  The scan was negative, yet he and I felt that there was something wrong so he sent me to get
