 Beginners Guide

This section is aimed at anyone who is setting up a tank for the first time. As well as anyone else who wants to brush up on the basics. If you follow these simple rules it will make your first tank a pleasure to have and not a journey of one disaster after another.

The Golden Rules

  1. Be patient. The fastest and the cheapest way to set up a tank is to do it right first time.
  2. It can take up to 6 weeks for a tank to mature, putting any fish in it before it is mature may result in their death.
  3. Do not over stock, new fish should be added gradually to allow the natural balance to be maintained.
  4. For the first 12 weeks only half stock the tank
  5. Don't over feed, fish are cold blooded any only need a fraction of the food of a mammal. They will come to no harm if left without food for two weeks while you go on holiday. However if your neighbour feeds them to much and the filters can't cope the fish will die.
  6. Do not buy any fish that you don't know about. Always find out about the fish before you buy.
  7. Don't buy a fish if there are dead or diseased fish in the same tank.
  8. Keep up to date with water changes and water test.
  9. Fish do die eventually. It doesn't always mean that you have done something wrong, so don't go rushing in with all kinds of treatments and remedies without knowing what it is you are treating because it can do a lot of harm.
  10. Have some fun. this is a great hobby so enjoy it.
