Stimulants

1992 - 2000

  • During this period in Britain, the rate of stimulant prescriptions for children soared by 9,200%.

1980 - 2000

  • Costs of ADHD related drugs rose from £72,970 to a staggering £29,358,340.

1993 - 2002

  • Prescriptions for all types of antidepressants rose from 10.8 million to 26.6 million
  • In those 8 years the NHS increased its spending on drugs from £100 million to £381 million.
  • A study done on the prescribing patterns of 100 GPs and 28 consultant psychiatrists found that GPs and Child Psychiatrists had prescribed hypnotic drugs and antidepressants to pre-school children under 5 years of age.

1999

  • More than 17.5 million prescriptions for minor tranquilisers were written for all age groups in the UK.
  • 1.5 million of these became addicted after a 4 week period.

2003

  • British Doctors issued about 3 million prescriptions for SSRIs.
  • 2 million Britons were taking antidepressants costing the NHS £380 million.
  • Half a million children alone were prescribed psychotropic drugs, some as young as 18 months.
  • 200,000 children were prescribed antidepressants, of these an estimated 40,000 were taking the anti-psychotic - Risperidone KNOWN to cause seizures, mania and uncontrolled muscle spasms.
  • Ritalin or similar drugs have been prescribed for 230,000 children compared with just 2,000 in 1991.

2004

  • Scientists discovered that Prozac is now being taken in such large quanties that it has been found in drinking water.
  • The study revealed traces of all pharmaceutical drugs travel through the sewage network and are recycled back into the water system.

2005

  • The Environment Agency completed research on 500 of the most common pharmaceuticals in England & Wales. Of these, 10 were found in sewage treatment works and 8 were in rivers used by treatment works.


Psychotropic Drugs Generally

  • Prescriptions for SSRIs in the UK run at about 10 million and are increasingly being prescribed for complaints such as weight loss, skin conditions, premenstrual tension and ADD.
  • Since 1991, there was a 166% increase in prescriptions for antidepressants in England, up to 24 million are given each year.
  • Patient groups estimate as many as six million Britons are now taking the drugs.


Deaths

1980 - 1992

  • Patient deaths in England has increased from 16 to 131 ( 710%) directly due to the prescription of the drug Methadone.

1990 - 1996

  • Benzodiazepines (minor tranquilizer) caused 1,810 deaths in Britain making them more lethal than heroin, cocaine or methadone which have caused 1,623 deaths combined.

1991 - 1997

  • Doctors attributed 125 deaths and 11,931 adverse reactions to Prozac. Doctors who have expressed concern about this have been ignored.


Involuntary Commitment

1991 - 1996

  • There was an increase of 45% in involuntary commitments to psychiatric institutions (people incarcerated against their will).

1998

  • There were 46,300 people involuntarily committed either on arrival to a psychiatric facility or being switched from voluntary to involuntary status whilst institutionalized.


Violent Crime

1975 - 2000

  •  In England violent crime has risen by 145%.
