FEEDING Ferrets are carnivores and have dog-like teeth designed for eating flesh. Their main diet was traditionally meat either in the form of pet mince, cat food or whole carcass(rabbit or pigeon, etc.) and this can still be fed wheneverpossible. However there are now some good dried foods on the market especially produced for ferrets. High protein cat biscuits (min 30%) will also suffice. With fresh meat, care must be taken to remove any left overs on a regular basis as ferrets tend to store uneaten food anywhere, with the obvious hazards from decay and flies. Dried food hasthe advantage of lasting longer and is often consumed befor such problems arise. In any case ferrets should be fed on a daily basis with the obvious attention to basic hygiene and food quality. With dried food ferrets will drink more water. Water should be supplied in a good sized drinking bottle and refreshed daily. Occasional treats of table scraps, ice-cream, raw egg or liver may be used. Cow's milk should be diluted with water as a ferret cannot digest it properly. If milk is used goat's milk is preferable also diluted with water. These are all treats and not basic diet requirements.
