HOUSING

Ferrets are very energetic and therefore need plenty of room in which to play and exercise. A rabbit hutch style of cage with a minimum size of 4ft x 2ft x 2ft high is suitable housing for a pair of ferrets as long as they are given the opportunity to exercise in a larger area on a regular basis. However, the bigger it is the better for the ferret.
The cage should be sturdy, draught proof and if kept outside weatherproof. It should have a separate sleeping area of about 1/3 of the cage, totally enclosed with a hole for access to the living area. A solid bottom to the cage is essential as ferrets can otherwise dig under and escape. Check the cage regularly for wear and tear eg small holes and weak door latches/hinges as ferrets are very good escape artists and seize on any opportunity to get out and explore new ground.
Bedding should be provided in the sleeping area, preferably in the form of soft shredded paper (not printed paper eg newspaper or printed computer paper). This is beneficial over hay or straw, traditionally used, which often proves to be too hot in the summer months and can harbour fleas. Dust free wood chip (not sawdust) or wood based cat litter should be used in the toilet corner of the living area of the cage. Some toys and tubes should also be provided as ferrets get bored easily when left on their own and always seem happier when they have something to play with.
The cage should be placed in a shaded area out of the direct sunlight and sheltered from wind and rain, if possible. Ferrets can easily become overheated and quickly die from heat exhaustion.
Ferrets are quite easily housetrained and readily adapt to using a cat litter tray for their toiletry needs. They will happily run around the house like any other pet playing with toys eg balls, tubes, squeaky toys etc and any other bits and pieces they come across. This includes prized household ornaments, plants and domestic appliances and should therefore always be supervised rather than left on their own in the house. Also be aware of open doors and windows, as ferrets will spot these often quicker than the owner does.
