Best conditions: November to March
Base town for exploring local breaks: Puerto Viejo
Brief description: Less visited than the more popular Tamarindo & Jaco, however the Carribean offers some of the heaviest surf in Costa Rica. This area is not for beginners. World class "salsa brava" offers a Hawaiin style reef break that leaves broken boards on a daily basis. We do not recommend that you surf alone over here…The Carribean side of Costa Rica is extremely beautiful with a variety of wildlife, a distinct culture and breathtaking landscapes and is certainly worth a visit.
Manzanillo - located 20 km south of Puerto Viejo boasting a fast break at the northern end of the beach (the southern tip is blocked by a large reef)
Salsa Brava - a thick Hawaiin style wave that builds in deep water and breaks over a shallow reef. …offers both lefts & rights…the right is generally a steep face and tubular and the left is usually
a shorter ride ; this is the most powerful wave in Costa Rica
Black Beach - offers a great beach break with waves year round…10 minutes from the national park of Cahuita
Westfalia - a long stretch of beach breaks offering lefts & rights…tends to close out on big swells
LIMON : there are 3 great spots in Limon
Isla Uvita - this island located off the coast of Limon offers an excellent, yet dangerous, left that breaks on a reef…this is the most powerful left in Costa Rica; this spot has three sections and it faces a coral reef; best days offer waves up to 10ft…EXPERTS ONLY…accessible only by boat in the morning
Playa Bonita - a point/reef break that offers a very powerful left w/ a tough entry…located just up the beach from Limon
Portrete - a very fast right that breaks over a reef in shallow water
(located just to the north of Playa Bonita.))
