2005 Year in Review

Naval Security Group - A Year in Review

Cryptologic Technicians continued to maintain 7 distinct branches, CTA, CTI, CTM, CTN, CTO, CTR and CTT. I'm suggesting that the acronym TAMORI - "Those Able Minds Of Rare Intellect" be changed to accomodate 2005 to read: TAMNORI - "The Absolutely Mind Numbing Organizational Revisions Implemented".

2005 was a year for changes to our community. COMNAVSECGRU disestablished as an Echelon II command, and became COMNAVNETWARCOM IOD Ft. Meade, MD (Information Operations Directorate) on 30 Sep 2005. FIWC Det San Diego merged with NSGA San Diego and became NIOC San Diego on 27 Jul 2005. FIWC Norfolk merged with NSGA Norfolk and became NIOC Norfolk on 05 Nov 2005. All other NSGA's throughout the world became NIOC's (Navy Information Operations Commands); and all NSG Det's and NSG Support Det's throughout the world became NIOD's (Navy Information Operations Detachments) on 30 Sep 2005; except NSG Det Diego Garcia, which closed.

A ceremony recognizing the disestablishment of NAVSECGRU was held at the it's headquarters on 30 Sep 2005, at Ft. Meade MD. During the ceremony, NAVSECGRU's final commander, RADM Andrew M. Singer, spoke about the transition the command had made. "This is a historic day to reflect what we have achieved and what we will achieve, looking forward to the future after seven decades of war, crisis and peace seen by Naval Security Group."

With the disestablishment of COMNAVSECGRU, The Navy's Cryptologic Technicians (CT's) enlisted community and the Cryptologic Officer community were combined into the same organization as the Navy's Information Systems Technicians (IT's) (ex RM's and DP's) and Information Warfare Officers.

All CT's, IT's, Cryptologic Officers and Information Warfare Officers are now part of the Naval Network Warfare Command, based at the Naval Amphibious Base (NAB), Little Creek, in Norfolk VA. NETWARCOM is the Navy's type commander for Information Warfare, Networks, Space, and now Cryptology. The NETWARCOM umbrella already included DCMS, FIWC, NAVCIRT, NNSOC, SPAWAR and all General Service (GENSER) communications activities (NCTS's).

The Cryptologic Officer community was disestablished as an entity, and combined into the Information Warfare Officers community.

For the CTO community, it's hard to believe that RM's and DP's (now IT's) and CTO's are now part of the same community. This became even more self evident, when in October, 2006, the CTO Rating merged with the IT Rating, and now, there are no more CTO's on active duty or in the reserves.

After a long close-down period which started in 2004, NSGA Naples Italy quietly and officially disestablished as an Echelon III command on 31 Mar 2005. Most of the CT's transferred to NCTS Naples IT or COMUSNAVEUR Naples IT.

NSGA Groton in New London, Connecticut began it's disestablishment as an Echelon III command, and became NSG Det Groton on approximately 06 Jun 2005, subordinate to NSGA Ft. Gordon, GA. On 30 Sep 05, NSG Det Groton became NIOD Groton. The official disestablishment of NSGA Groton was on 12 Jan 06.

NSGA Rota Spain disestablished as an Echelon III command, and became NSG Det Rota on 06 Jun 2005, subordinate to NSGA Ft. Gordon, GA. On 30 Sep 05, NSG Det Rota became NIOD Rota, and ultimately closed on 15 Dec 2005. Mission and functions of NSGA Rota were transferred to NSGA, now NIOC Ft. Gordon.

NSGR Reserve units (formerly NRSG) became NNWR Reserve units on 30 Sep 05. And on 31 Oct 05, the headquarters of the Reserve Cryptologic community moved from NAS/JRB Ft. Worth, TX to Ft. Meade, MD, where it was merged with the active duty cryptologic community; under the COMNAVNETWARCOM IOD umbrella.

At Corry Station in Pensacola, the Center for Cryptology (formerly NTTC Corry Station, Pensacola, FL) merged with the Center for Information Technology (CIT), headquartered in San Diego; and became the Center for Information Dominance (CENINFODOM or CID), Corry Station, Pensacola, FL on 10 Jan 2005. The detachments at Monterey and Keesler AFB also adopted the CID name.

NSG Related:

VQ-1 Det (FAIRECONRON One Det) (Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron 1 Detachment) in Misawa, Japan disestablished on 01 Apr 2005.

VQ-2 Rota (FAIRECONRON Two) (Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron 2), an Echelon V command, was relocated from Rota, Spain to Whidbey Island, Oak Harbor, WA on 30 Sep 2005. VQ-2 had been located in Rota for the past 45 years. VQ-2 will join VQ-1, already stationed at Whidbey Island. NSGA Rota and AIMU Rota (Aviation Intermediate Maintenance Unit) were disestablished. VQ-2, NSGA and AIMU constituted 17% of the population at the Naval Base in Rota, which will continue to operate it's airfields, as a VQ-2 forward deployment venue.

All NSGA's and NSG Det's become NIOC's and NIOD's on 30 Sep 05, with the exception of: FIWC Det/NSGA San Diego: 27 Jul 2005; and FIWC/NSGA Norfolk: 05 Nov 05.
