 | | In 2005, LCRA plans to open Matagorda Bay Nature Park. | | LCRA has set aside 16,000 acres of parks, recreation areas and preserves along the Colorado River from Lake Buchanan to Matagorda Bay for the public to enjoy. There is plenty to do, including boating, swimming, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, camping, horseback riding and more. You can come for a day or longer, stay in a tent or a furnished air-conditioned cabin, stay in a recreational vehicle site with water and electricity or rough it under the stars in a primitive campsite. Visitors can share a lakeside beach with dozens of other people or find solitude on a wilderness hike. They can look for wildlife or just enjoy the view of the Hill Country, lakes or coastal wetlands. Here's a quick look at what to expect at the types of LCRA park facilities: - Developed parks offer facilities such as boat ramps, fishing docks, rest rooms with showers, pavilions, tent camping and RV sites, swimming areas and hiking trails. Lodges, cabins and shelters are available at some parks.
- Nature parks and natural science centers offer a mix of habitat, activities and lodging (at some facilities) that fulfill a need for quality educational experiences for teachers and students, as well as outdoor adventures and nature programs for adults.
- Recreation areas on the Highland Lakes are less crowded natural areas with fewer amenities. Some have boat ramps, tent camping and fire rings. Many have hiking trails with spectacular views of the lakes.
- River access sites located between Austin and Matagorda Bay provide public access to the Colorado River for canoeists, kayakers and other small boat enthusiasts.
