What is Melanoma?

Melanoma is a tumor of melanocytes, the pigment-producing cells that give our skin its color. These cells are located all over the skin, but are more heavily concentrated in moles. When one of these cells becomes malignant it produces a tumor called a melanoma. A melanoma may appear in a mole that has been present for a long time or in parts of the skin which previously appeared normal.

  • Strategies for Combining Chemotherapy and Biotherapy in Melanoma -
The treatment of metastatic melanoma remains unsatisfactory, with patient survival dictated primarily by the pace of the disease.  Of all the currently employed treatment modalities, cisplatin-based regimens combined with biologic agents such as interferon alfa (IFN-a) and interleukin-2 (IL-2), referred to as "biochemotherapy"or "chemoimmunotherapy," have attained the highest clinical response.  Read more at:

The incidence of melanoma has been doubling every 6 - 10 years here in the US with 44 000 new cases in the US during 1999 alone. Allovectin-7 uses a lipid-DNA complex to help the immune system recognize and attack cancer cells. It is currently in Phase II and Phase III testing in certain patients with metastatic melanoma and in Phase II testing in patients with unresectable head and neck cancer. Leading cancer centers throughout the United States are recruiting patients with metastatic melanoma for Phase III and Phase II registration trials with Allovectin-7. Read all about it at:
