Carlos Moya was born on August 27, 1976 in Palma de Majorque (Spain). Moya's father brought his son onto the court at a very young age. Carlos started to train intensively at the age of 12 and became a professional tennis player in 1994. During the first season he won his first prize in Kloster (Grison). At the Australian Open in Melbourne in 1996, he defeated the champions Boris Becker and Michael Chang as well as Pete Sampras in the final. This is when Moya's career took off. He capture his first career Grand Slam at Roland Garros in 1998, and became World No. 1 in March 1999. He has won 19 titles in all.
Moya's game revolves around methodically breaking down opponents with his heavy top-spinning western forehand. His most impressive technical qualities are the forehand and his agility and speed around the court. Alex Corretja, a good friend of Moya and an admirer of his game, describes his fellow Spaniard's style of play as having an "anaesthetic effect."
