Frank Bruce Taylor,{WWHS 1956} 68, of Daniels, died Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, at the Charleston Area Medical Center Memorial Division following an apparent heart attack.Born at Alpoca, on Aug. 18, 1937, he was the son of the late Ernest and Thelma Mae Lawson Taylor, and was the stepson of Nina Blair of Crab Orchard.Mr. Taylor was the co-owner and operator, with his son, Greg, of Taylor’s Produce in Crab Orchard, which began in 1967.Mr. Taylor was reared at Crab Orchard, and had made Daniels his home for 41 years. He attended the Blue Jay United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Garnet Canterbury. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Ruth Canterbury Taylor; sons, Greg Taylor and wife, Leah, of Daniels, and Terry Taylor and wife, Carole, of Orange Park, Fla.; three grandchildren, Nicholas, Korbin and Kaden; a sister, Ernestine Eakers and husband, Doug, of Ashboro, N.C.; a stepbrother, Donald Blair of Crab Orchard; an aunt, Beulah Miller of Ballard; father-in-law, Woodrow Canterbury of Daniels; and several cousins. Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Blue Jay United Methodist Church with the Rev. Betty Lusk officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, Beckley. Brian Hinton Hopkins, 36, of MacArthur, died at home on Monday, Sept. 5, 2005.Brian was the son of Susan Cassell '64 Matheny and Tom Matheny of Beckley and the late Ste-phen F. Hopkins Sr., and the grandson of the late B.H. “Bill” and Edith Hopkins, and John Cassell Sr.Brian was born Dec. 28, 1968, in Beckley, and lived most of his life in MacArthur.He was a disabled general laborer and lawn maintenance worker and was of the Baptist faith. Brian was an avid sports fan and idolized Larry Bird. He loved the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pittsburgh Pirates. In his earlier years, he was a state wrestling champion and an all-star baseball pitcher. He also played football. He loved watching TV, Larry Bird videos and “Rocky” movies. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his son, Steven; three brothers, Stephen Hopkins II of MacArthur, Emil Bailey Jr. and wife, Assia, of Alexandria, Va., and Jeremy Bailey of Cary, N.C.; grandmother, Julia Cassell; niece, Stephanie Hopkins; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Byrd Drive, Beckley, is serving the family Bette L. Evans Patterson, {WWHS 1954} 70, of Beckley, died Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a short illness. Born April 15, 1935, in Beckley, she was the daughter of Martha Dixon Evans and Daniel E. Evans and her beloved stepfather, Richard Morgan. Mrs. Patterson was formerly employed by Thompson Coal Leasing in Mount Hope and as officer manager of Beckley Institute of Hair Design. She was a 1954 honor graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and attended Concord and Beckley College. She was an Episcopalian and since 1956 a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority. She shared her life with her sorority sisters. Mrs. Patterson was an avid dog lover of Cardigan Welsh Corgi breed of dogs. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles T. Patterson, whom she married Feb. 6, 1970. Survivors include her sisters-in-law, Wanda Lickliter of Beckley and Frances W. Jones of Beckley. Private service will be held by the Beta Sigma Phi sorority at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville. There will be no visitation. Beta Sigma Phi sorority will meet at the funeral home at 10:45 a.m. It is asked that no food be brought to the house. Harlene Burton Bailey, {WWHS 1956} Loving wife and mother - quintessential businesswoman. Harlene Burton Bailey, 67, a 45 year resident of Las Vegas, died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2005. She fought a determined sometimes brutal battle with cancer and surrendered of her own free choice, at the proper time, with a clear head and with joyfulness, in the midst of her children and husband. She was born in Beckley, W.Va., and moved to Las Vegas with Gary, her husband, in 1960. She was the human resource director at the Las Vegas Club in the 60's then became a realtor in 1971. She opened a successful real estate office in 1980 with Gary and ran it until her death. She loved her profession and volunteered countless hours to further the realtor cause, ultimately inducted into the Greater Las Vegas Association of Realtors "Hall of Fame". She was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret Molsberry and Earl Burton Sr. She is survived by her husband, of 47 years, Gary; her daughter, Sheryl Creswell; son, Greg Bailey; grandchildren, Dallas Creswell, Bailey Creswell and Madison Bailey, all of Las Vegas. Service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at Palm Mortuary, 7400 W. Cheyenne (Cheyenne/Buffalo). James R. Bennett, {WWHS 1956}67, of Beckley, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005, after a long and courageous battle with numerous cancers as a result of a kidney transplant in 1987. James was the 7th renal transplant done at CAMC in Charleston. James was born Dec. 5, 1937, in Lanark. He was the son of the late Paul J. Bennett and Thelma Bairs Bennett of Glen Jean. James was a loving husband and devoted father to his family and friends. He enjoyed hunting, gardening and restoring cars. James attended Mount View Church of God. He was a retired construction worker. He served his country in the United States Army. Other than his father, James was preceded in death by two sisters, Florence Jones and Bonnie Linville. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 43 years, Emogene "Jean" Bennett; a daughter, Angela Turner and husband, Jonathan, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; a son, Gregory J. Sam was born Jan. 20, 1930, at Epperly Hill, the son of the late Samuel A. and Ora B. Cadle Harper. Sam loved to shoot pool, watch baseball and football, classic cars, dancing, the outdoors, animals, babies and the elderly. He was a lifelong resident of Raleigh County. He worked as a car salesman for Hall Chevrolet, Gene Smith Dodge and Raleigh Motor Sales. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge and the Eagles. Other than his parents, Sam was preceded in death by two sisters, Shirley Ann Harper and Phyllis Faye Higgins. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving brothers, James Harper and wife, Rita, of Beckley and Butch Harper of Crab Orchard; a sister, Vickie Lynn Adkins and husband, Rick, of Beckley; a nephew and niece, Robbie Higgins and Victoria Cochran, both of Crab Orchard; special friends, Sam and Capp Pilliteri of Crab Orchard and several nieces and nephews. TALCOTT - Lino Silvio DeMarchi, Sr., 59, of Talcott, died Friday, July 22, 2005, of a prolonged illness in the Summers County Appalachian Regional Hospital. Lino was born in Thornhill. As a child, he moved with his parents to Beckley, where he was a member of the St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church. He attended Lincoln Elementary and Beckley Junior High Schools. He attended Woodrow Wilson High School, where he was a baseball player and a record setting shot putter. After high school, he attended the Charleston Barber College. He served as a Staff Sergeant in the 492nd Replacement Detachment in the U.S. Army Reserves. He worked as a barber, a coal miner for the Roland Mine with the Consolidated Coal Company, a guard at the West Virginia Penitentiary, a Deputy for the Raleigh County Sheriff's Office, and a Weight Enforcement Supervisor for the West Virginia Department of Transportation. Lino was a Master Mason of the Beckley Masonic Lodge, #95, A.F.&A.M., the Beni Kedem Shrine of Beckley, Past President of the Beckley Shrine Club, a Royal Arch Mason, and a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Black Diamond Lodge #81. His extensive interest in politics led him to contribute his time and efforts to many local, state, and national political campaigns. An enthusiastic athlete, he played baseball and league softball throughout his life. He was a friend to everyone, a gifted storyteller, and an avid prankster. His parents, Pietro Leandro and Maria Pietrantozzi DeMarchi of Beckley; a son, Daniel Leandro DeMarchi of Talcott, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Jane Mize DeMarchi of Talcott; a son, Lino, Jr., and his wife Robin of Charleston; a daughter, Gina Taylor and her husband Matt of Sandyville; one grandson, Jonathan Carter Taylor of Sandyville; an uncle, Dandelo Pietrantozzi and his wife Elizabeth of Beckley; and a sister, Virginia Shumate and her husband George of Bluefield, Va. Rite of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 1 p.m. at Melton Mortuary Chapel with Father Sammy Sacus officiating. Rite of Committal will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity. Beckley Lodge #95 will conduct the Masonic graveside rite.
