Roy Golden Pittman, 72, of Beckley, was called home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 2, 2004. Roy was born Dec. 21, 1931, in Beckley, the son of the late Lloyd Baxter Pitt-man and Gra-cie Brown Pittman.Mr. Pitt-man was of the Baptist faith and attended Glen View Regular Baptist Church.Mr. Pittman served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He also loved fishing, horseshoes, attending church and especially spending time with his grandchildren.Roy was retired from the 7-Up Bottling Co., where he had worked as a lift operator for many years.Roy was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Amber and Jessica; a brother, Law-rence Pittman; a sister, Dany Smith; two nephews, Larry and Dale Pittman; and a very special Uncle Ernest W. "Pop" Pittman.Those left to cherish his special memory are his loving wife of 46 years, Sandra Spence Pittman; six children, Ernie Pittman and wife, Kim, of Sprague, Rick Pittman and wife, Londa, of Sprague, Sarah Pittman and fiancé, John Childers, of Sprague, Mark Pittman and wife, Kellie, of Fayetteville, Donna Nagye and husband, Mark, of Prosperity and Albert Pittman and fiancée, Heather Meadows, of Sprague; two sisters, Joann Bowyer and husband, Carlos, of Huber Heights, Ohio, and Jewel Jones; 10 precious grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; two special aunts, Garnet Pittman of Sprague and Opal Neal of Prosperity; and two special cousins, Mike Bostic and Sally Lawson.Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with Roy's very special friend, the Rev. Jimmy Leach, officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.Pallbearers will be Steve Leach, Jerry Miller, Jerry Mc-Guire, Wayne Lawson, Robert Furrow and Donzie Lawson.Friends may gather with the family 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.Arrangements entrusted to Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. - Wilma Louise Ballard, 84, formerly of Beckley, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at home.Born Oct. 16, 1919, in Boone, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Eugene Avery Kirby and Dora Ellen Griffith.Mrs. Ballard was a teacher. She moved to Florida in 1990 from Richmond, Va. She was a graduate of Beckley College with an A.A. degree, a graduate of Morris Harvey University in Charleston, with a B.A. degree and received her master's degree in education from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.Mrs. Ballard taught school for 30 years in Richmond, grades 1 through 12. After moving to Florida, she served as a substitute teacher at area schools in New Smyrna Beach. She was a member of First Baptist Church of New Smyrna Beach and its Joy Sunday School Class.She was preceded in death by her husband, Jay Golden Ballard Jr., in 1969; and a son, Jay Gene Ballard, in 1993.Survivors include daughters, Betty Jean (Jack) Miller of New Smyrna Beach, Marita Ann (Howard) Dorr of Colonial Heights, Va., and Constance Sue (Richard) Meadows of New Smyrna Beach; a sister, Macy (Buster) Mathis of Sumter, S.C.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; an aunt, Odell Turner of Lashmeet; and several nieces and nephews.Service will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. E.G. "Buzz" Keller Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.


Edythe P. Clay, 88, of Old Eccles Road, Beckley, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, in a local hospital after a long illness.Born Dec. 30, 1915, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late H.J. and Hallie Smith Clay.Miss Clay was a graduate of Trap Hill High School, attended Beckley College and received her bachelor's and master's degrees from Marshall University. She worked for Fayette County Extension Service from 1941-1942, taught at Woodrow Wilson High School from 1942-1943, Marsh Fork High School, 1942-1943, and Trap Hill High School from 1943-1952.She was employed by the Raleigh County Board of Education as a secondary curriculum supervisor from 1952 until her retirement in 1986.Miss Clay was a member of the Raleigh County Education Association, West Virginia Education Association, National Education Association and the West Virginia Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.In her younger years she had attended Mount Tabor Baptist Church.Miss Clay was preceded in death by a brother, Mason Clay, in March 1995, and had lived her entire life on Old Eccles Road.Survivors include two sisters, Ethel Green and Jean Westfall, both of Huntington; three nieces, Ann Detzer of Okeechobee, Fla., Wanda Dorsey of Beckley and Joyce Johnson of Owings Mills, Md.; and two nephews, Glen Clay of Beckley and Craig Westfall of Huntington.In keeping with Miss Clay's wishes, private service will be held at Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Edward Garten officiating. A eulogy will be given by her grandnephew, Heath Dorsey. Burial will follow in Mount Tabor Church Cemetery.There will be no visitation.In lieu of flowers, Miss Clay requested that memorial contributions be made to the Youth Museum of Southern West Virginia, P.O. CHARLESTON - Kathryn Elizabeth Meador, 83, went to heaven on Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at St. Francis Hospital due to complications after heart surgery.
Kathryn was born at Flat Top. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Johnson Meador, a prominent evangelist and radio minister of the "Shut In Hour" of the Charles-ton area; and her parents, Walter and Pearl Lilly Fink.Kathryn attended Bible Center Church.Kathryn is survived by sons, Dennis R. Meador and wife, Eva Gay, of Jeffersonville, Ind., Knarl Gene "Snake" Meador and wife, Yvonne, of Monroe, Ga., E.J. Meador and wife, Nancy, of Charleston, Lloyd L. Meador and wife, Margaret, of Elkview, Gary W. Meador and wife, Linda, of Jeffersonville, Ind., and Randy Meador and wife, Diane, of Charleston; a sister, Blanche Welch of Dunbar; 17 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; and a very special friend, Truman Henley.A gathering of family and friends will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bartlett Burdette Cox Funeral Home, 513 Tennessee Ave., Charleston.Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Oscar Junior Pierce, 56, of Maple Fork, died Saturday, May 8, 2004, in a Charleston hospital following a short illness. Born on March 30, 1948, at Sullivan, he was the son of the late James Monroe "Pete" Pierce and Pearl J. Adams Pierce Richmond.He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, Arthur D. Richmond and a brother, Russell L. Pierce.Mr. Pierce was a coal miner for several years before becoming a self-employed heavy equipment operator, which he worked for 30 years before retiring four years ago. He was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Sally; two sons, Oscar Junior Pierce II of Mabscott, and James Wayne Pierce and wife, Shana of Maple Fork; two daughters, Sissy Bell and husband, Chuck of Princewick and Ann M. Robinson and fiancé, Mark Bailey of Maple Fork; nine grandchildren, Charlie and Jeff Bell, Ashley Pierce, Chad Robinson, Tyler Pierce, Michael Pierce, Cheyanne and Zoe Bailey and Chloe Pierce; four brothers, Bill and wife, Sandy of Looneyville, Roger and wife, Artie of MacArthur, Ron and wife, Frances of Raleigh Ridge Road and Wayne and wife, Brenda of Beckley; two sisters, Betty Brooks of Oak HIll, and Carolyn Lambert and husband, Melvin of MacArthur; several nieces and nephews and by special-in-laws, Janet and Jerry Rose of Cool Ridge, Judy McMillian of Crab Orchard, David and Lilly Bell of Mabscott and James and Ivalene Bell of Crab Orchard.Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Melton Mortuary Chapel with Ministers Paul Chapman and John Catlett officiating. LOCUST GROVE, Va. - Margaret Louise Meadows, 66, of Locust Grove, passed away on Saturday, May 8, 2004, at her residence.Mrs. Meadows was born April 2, 1938, a daughter of the late Sarah Ruth Smith and James Woodrow Tolliver. She was a 1956 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley. Mrs. Meadows was a member of Chancellor Baptist Church and throughout her adult life, she was active in many community and church functions. Mrs. Meadows was a founding employee of Meadows Farms and remained with the family-owned business until her retirement.
Mrs. Meadows was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and was an inspiration to her family and especially the youth in her community. She is survived by her husband, Fred Meadows of Locust Grove, Va.; three sons, Rick Meadows, James Meadows and his wife, Karen, all of Locust Grove, Va., and Ron Meadows and his wife, Fran, of Ashburn, Va.; a sister, Freda Lushbaugh and her husband, Ron, of Mechanicsville, Va.; a brother, John Cook of Roanoke, Va.; four grandchildren, Jacob, Jamie, Shay and Sloan; a sister-in-law, Nola Turner; six brothers-in-law, seven nieces and 11 nephews; as well as many great nieces and great nephews.Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Chancellor Baptist Church, 11324 Gordon Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22407. Dixie Bragg-Cook, 99, passed away Friday, April 30, 2004, at Greystone Inn.Born Sept. 2, 1904, at Laurel Creek, she was the daughter of the late Hanley and Mattie Toler-Bragg.She moved to Raleigh County at a very early age and was a lifelong resident of the area. She had a special fondness for Beckley where she enjoyed shopping and visiting as a very young woman. It was here that she married her husband, Kyle G. Cook, on Dec. 24, 1921.She was a homemaker, devoted wife and mother. She was a member of Mabscott Christian Baptist Church, past member of the Rebekah Charity and had the privilege of teaching Sunday school for a number of years as a young mother.Mrs. Cook was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Kyle G. Cook; two daughters, Joy May and Lois; a stepdaughter, Margaret Cook-Cales; and two sisters, Margaret Bragg-Gurack and Gladys Bragg-Cook. Mrs. Cook is survived by her loving children, Helen Gardner of Mabscott, Virginia Woods and her husband, Norman, of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Kyle C. Cook and wife, Jo Ann, of Huntington; two granddaughters, Dr. Cheryl Cook-Ferguson of Kentucky and Regina Gardner-Trollinger of Delaware; a stepgranddaughter, Sandra Cook of Virginia; two nieces and a nephew; four great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.Mrs. Cook was known for her empathy, kindness and interest in the health and well-being of her family and many friends. She was always ready with a word of love, comfort, sympathy and encouragement. Her desire to help others was always foremost. She had a tear for every sorrow for those she knew, as well as those she had only heard of, and a prayer for all.Her lifelong wish was that all persons would be kind, considerate and compassionate to all beings.Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with Rev. DURHAM, N.C. - Sally Lynn Gallaher, 65, WWHS Class of 1956, formerly of Beckley, passed away Tuesday, April 20, 2004, in North Carolina.Born June 17, 1938, in Beckley, she was the daughter of William Honaker and Daisy Meador Honaker. Mrs. Gallaher was of the Methodist faith. She loved to go to the beach, loved reading, crocheting, flowers, and especially loved her cat, Max.She was preceded in death by two sisters, Lillian Bonds and Eloise Kennison; and a brother, Bill Honaker.Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, William R. Gallaher; a daughter, Jennifer Lynn Gallaher of Beckley; a son, William R. Gallaher III and wife, Jerri, of Beckley; two granddaughters, Amanda Marie Gallaher of Beckley and Betty Jean "Genie" Gallaher; two grandsons, William R. Gallaher IV and Stephen H. Gallaher of Beckley; a great-great-grandson, Bradley Scott Anderson of Beckley; a great-great-granddaughter, Abigail Marie Gallaher of Beckley; three sisters, Patty Wiseman, Catherine Cox and Helen Janney; and numerous nieces and nephews.Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley. Billie Lou Stover, age 70, of Glen White, died Friday, April 16, 2004.Born June 6, 1933, in Wharton, Boone County, she was the daughter of the late William and Sarah Lula Hopper Huguenot.Mrs. Stover was a member of the Glen White Church of God, was an original volunteer, advocate and dietician at the Women's Resource Center. On the 25th anniversary of the Women's Resource Center, Mrs. Stover was honored for being on of the original volunteers and for her years of service to the center.
Mrs. Stover was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis O. Stover on February 18, 2002 and had been a resident of Glen White for the past 55 years.Survivors include her five sons, William Stover and his wife Janice of Bradley, Jerry Stover and his wife Julie of Surveyor, Danny Stover and his wife Tonia of Harper, Barry Stover and his wife JoHanna of Bradley, and Michael Stover and his wife Teresa of Crab Orchard; her daughter, Sharon Stover of Columbus, Ohio; 16 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday from the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor Jesse Farley officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. today.
