GEELONG'S Mr Olympics has died aged 92. Dick Garrard, Australia's most successful amateur wrestler and oldest Commonwelath Games representative, passed away late on Saturday night after a short period of illness --------------------------------------------------------------
Australian Olympic Committee -
We pass on this excerpt about the Dick Garrard from Josip Mrkoci,
Chairman of the Executive Committee, Commonwealth Amateur Wrestling
Association. .........
""The world's wrestling fraternity is saddened by the passing, of one of its great legends… his was truly an outstanding contribution to the sport of wrestling spanning seven decades, three Olympiads and four Commonwealth Games as a competitor plus several more years an official and administrator. Dick's accomplishments as an athlete are extraordinary to say the least, he won a silver medal in the 1948 Olympics as well as three gold medals and a bronze in four Commonwealth Games. He also competed in lesser events as a pistol shooter and a weightlifter. If that were not enough he founded a life saving station at Torquay beach and personally saved some 20 lives. How does one measure such a figure? It is beyond the bounds of ordinary mortals to measure. Men such dedication and talent are rare indeed.
The Commonwealth wrestling community has been privileged to have such a man in our sport…"

Manchester Games beckon for wrestler
Sydney University wrestlers had mixed fortunes at the recent Australian National Championships.
Sydney University Sports Union Sports Scholarship holder Leonid Zaslavsky, the wrestling coach at the Sydney University club, gained selection in the Australian Commonwealth Games team for Manchester later this year with a strong performance at the nationals.
However, there was bad news for the University's other hopeful, Brett Cash, who missed Games selection after coming up against a two-time Olympian at the nationals.
Zaslavsky, a BSc (Exercise and Sport Science) student, recently took up the reins as coach at Sydney University.
"I want to become the best coach possible in the sport of wrestling and reach the Olympics one more time as an athlete," he said. "Academically, I would like to earn a PhD." On the sporting front, the 32-year-old finished 14th in the 62kg division at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta after finishing first in the Oceania Championships and Olympic trials. He missed selection for the Sydney Olympics but holds hopes of winning a place on the Australian team for the 2004 Games in Athens.
Zaslavsky has had a 14-year career in wrestling, while on the academic front he gained a BSc (physics and computer science) from the University of New South Wales after completing his schooling at Sydney Boys High School. Cash, who also holds a Sports Scholarship, is already being tipped as a contender for the 2004 Olympic Games team despite missing Commonwealth Games selection.
