Guelph Open is a Success - by John Ewing
January 20, 2003
The Gryphon wrestlers hosted an excellent tournament, the Guelph Open, on Saturday with great results. The women's team claimed the team title lead by gold medallists Ohenewa Akuffo, Alana Petzchler and Teresa Piotrowski. Akuffo dominated the field at 72 kg while Petzchler used a pin for an upset victory against a tough opponent from Brock at 67 kg. Piotrowski easily handled a tough opponent from Brock in the 51 kg final. In a marquee matchup at 63 kg, Sarah McMann from the American Sunkist club defeated local favorite Tara Hedican in a close final. Rounding out the women's results were Brooke Hildtich who was fourth at 63 kg and Laura Stellato who was sixth at 48 kg.
On the men's side, Guelph finished a strong second in the team standings, led by Zoltan Hunyady and Orett Morgan. Hunyady, a Canadian National Team member cruised through the 74 kg class, easily taking the final 5-0. Morgan continued his excellent season by winning the 120 kg class with a convincing 6-0 win in the final that included two excellent three-point takedowns. Rookie Chris Prickett had a spectacular performance, placing second at 60 kg. He lost a tough final after posting awesome ten-point victories against opponents from Manitoba and Saskatechewan before another strong win against Jesse Saunders from Burnaby Mountain. One week after upsetting the reigning Senior National champion in Edmonton, Victor Sprenger battled his way to a fourth place finish at 84 kg. Rookie and President's Scholar, Cory Hewitt continued his strong season with a fourth place finish at 74 kg. Jamie Cox was inches from winning a close semi-final at 96 kg against the eventual champion before finishing fifth. Another rookie and Junior National Team member, Sean Hughes, had a solid tournament at 55 kg, including a sensational five-point throw in one match. Rory McDonnell also finished a solid sixth at 74 kg.
Head Coach Doug Cox was pleased with the team's performance. "The team is really starting to come together," he said. "We're getting ready to hit our peak at the CIS championships and this is a great first step by winning the women's title today and placing well in the men's competition." The Gryphons will be back in action next week when they compete in Brampton at the Junior and Senior Provincial Championships.
