   2007- Championship General Information -


GENERAL INFORMATION

Commonwealth Wrestling Championships:

The Championships are being held every 2 years. The first Championship was held in 1985 in Glasgow, Scotland.  The  2005 Commonwealth Championships were held in Stellenboch ( Capetown) , South Africa. 

The  GRECO-ROMAN wrestling style  was added to the Championships in 2005  & will be held as part of  Commonwealth Wrestling Championships in London, Canada in 2007.

 As of February 28th, 2007   - 12 -  COMMONWEALTH   countries representative wrestling teams have confirmed their participation  for -  2007 Commonwealth Wrestling Championships in  London, Ontario, CANADA   (June 16-17). 

AUSTRALIA,  CANADA , ENGLAND,  GAMBIA,  INDIA,  NEW ZEALAND, NIGERIA, PAKISTAN, SCOTLAND, SOUTH AFRICA , SAMOA and  WALES

Athletes: -  2 per weight for each country (men) - in FREESTYLE

                 OPEN  weight class ( men) - in GRECO-ROMAN
                 OPEN  weight class ( women) - in FREESTYLE

Note - No restriction as to how many athletes a nation enters
           per weight class in - Women's Freestyle  and in 
           Men's Greco-Roman style

FILA weight classes in kilograms:

Men's Freestyle  & Greco-Roman - 55, 60, 66, 74, 84, 96, 120

Women's Freestyle  - 48, 51, 55, 59, 63, 67, 72

Competition Draw:  2 - round robin pools with a cross over of the top 3 from each pool for wrestling FINALS. (old East German Draw)

Wrestling Camp/Symposium: for wrestlers on June 18 - 22

"Canada Cup of International Wrestling" in Guelph : - June - 23

Competition & Accommodation Site:   for 2007 Championships -

"University of Western Ontario  with a  sports hall for spectators  and  has all the necessary facilities for wrestlers, coaches, officials and referees - Preliminaries to be held in THAMES HALL and the Finals ( Gold medal matches) to be held at ALUMNI HALL.

Accommodation  - for athletes and officials will be at the ESSEX HALL  on the campus of the University of Western Ontario

The University of Western Ontario (also known as Western, UWO, or Western Ontario) is a coeducational, non-denominational, research university located in London, Ontario, Canada.

The University of Western Ontario is one of Canada's oldest universities, having been founded in 1878 by Bishop Isaac Hellmuth and the Anglican Diocese of Huron as The Western University of London Ontario. The first students graduated in arts and medicine in 1883. Today, The University of Western Ontario is a vibrant centre of learning with 1,249 faculty members and almost 35,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

Research is an integral part of the University’s mission, and external support for research projects totals nearly $190 million per year. There are about 1,200 faculty members at the university and affiliated colleges. Through its twelve faculties and schools, and three affiliated colleges, the University offers more than 200 different degree and diploma programs. Entrance requirements to the university are high, with an increasing entering average for the 2005–06 class at 86%. The student/faculty ratio for the 2003–04 year was about 21 students per member of faculty.

Western is known among Canadians as Western or UWO, and expressed to and among Americans as Western Ontario.

ESSEX HALL - ( food  & accommodation site)

Description

Essex Hall is conveniently located close to all the meetings and wrestling competition site activities. This residence offers clean, comfortable and affordable accommodation in apartment-style units. These are four single bedrooms , two full bathrooms, a common area and kitchenette (complete with microwave oven, stove top and refrigerator) in each unit.

Accommodations are available for the nights of June 12 to June 22, 2007. Check-in is after 3:00 p.m. on your day of arrival and check-out is before 11:00 a.m. on your day of departure.  The building  is air-conditioned for your comfort.

The building is staffed 24 hours a day at the Front Desk and the guests will be accommodated in fully furnished rooms, complete with bed linen, towels, soap and drinking glass. Daily service is provided to the rooms by University staff. Each unit in Essex Hall will be designated male, female or co-ed.

According to University policy, smoking is not permitted in the residence. There are pay phones and vending machines for snacks and beverages located in the building and coin-operated laundry facilities on each floor.

Residence Meals

The residence has it's own dining room and the Executive Chef offers a wide variety of menu items at each scheduled meal. We are confident you will not leave the dining room hungry! Breakfast is served each day in the dining room of Essex Hall at a predetermined time each day. A wide variety of menu items are offered at each meal.

London is a city in Southwestern Ontario, Canada along the Quebec City-Windsor Corridor with a metropolitan area population of 457,720; the city proper had a population of 352,395 in the 2006 Canadian census.

London is the seat of Middlesex County, at the forks of the non-navigable Thames River, halfway between Toronto and Detroit, Michigan. It is located at 43°0'N 81°15'W.
