| Let's look into installing a Modem | I nstalling an internal PCI modem board is relatively easy. The first step is to determine if your motherboard has an onboard Modem(integrated into the mother board). This onboard modem has to be disabled prior to installing the new Modem. If your motherboard (MOBO) manual does not have this information (an Onboard Modem is usually disabled in the BIOS), you will need to contact the MOBO manufacturer for instructions. If you are replacing an existing card to achieve a faster dial speed, disregard the onboard Modem reference.
You may decide to utilize the driver that came with the new Modem for installation after the physical install of the Modem or go to your new Modem's manufacturer's web site and download an updated driver. Create a folder on your Desktop for this purpose. If the driver download was zipped, unzip it in the folder so it will be ready for the install. Of course, you still have the choice to install the driver that came with the new Modem.
Turn off the PC and unplug it.
Static Electricity is a killer of computer components. Be sure to remain in physical contact with the case at all times. If in doubt, get an static strap bracelet from any computer store before you begin the installation. Please view the shots from our NIC Installation Tutorial HERE for a visual on the installation of the new card. After the new Modem is secured in its slot, put the case back on. Plug in the power cord and connect the phone line from the wall jack to the 'Line' port on the Modem you just installed, which will now show on the back of your PC. If your surge protector has a port for your phone line, plug the phone line from the wall jack to the 'in' port of the protector. Plug a secondary phone line from the 'out' port of the protector to the 'Line' port of your Modem.
Installing the Software. Read the manual that came with the Modem. Turn your PC on. Windows will detect the new Modem and start the Installation Wizard. If you chose to use the driver that came with the Modem, insert the CD. If you opt to use the new downloaded drivers, direct windows to the correct location. Follow the wizard to complete the installation. If Windows boots fully by canceling the Installation Wizard and you choose to manually install the drivers, Disable your Anti-Virus software before installing the software/driver to avoid corruption.
The installation of an External Modem obviously avoids the need to enter the case. For Cable and DSL modems, you will have a self installation kit complete with instructions for an easy installation experience. However, you may have the option of having your Cable or DSL modem installed by your ISP technician.
Congratulations, you have just installed your new Modem . If you have any questions, please feel free to ask HERE. ©Norm Computing Solutions Center 2001, 2002, 2003 |
