| | | 1. First, open up Winamp and press Ctrl/P to open the preferences window. Click on Output and select the second output device from the top (Nullsoft Disk Writer plug-in v1.0(x86). | | | | 2. Next, click on configure and browse to where you want the wav to be saved. The default for wav storage is C:\Windows\Media.Click ok. | | | 3. Now, back to the Winamp player. One very important note here: make sure that you do not have the Repeat option chosen. If you do have Repeat chosen, this will repeat and repeat untill it has filled your hard drive. This will quickly fill up even large hard drives. | | | 4. Choose your equilizer settings. If these are too high or low, you will get distortion, just like on a real stereo. For a good sound, I choose Full Bass & Treble. Click load. | | | 5. Click play. There will be no sound, this is normal. When the song finishes, open up Preferences again and reset the output to the top Nullsoft plugin again. Click Configure, do not change any settings, just click ok. Then click close. You can also close Winamp at this point, we are done with it. | | | 6. Now open up Sound Recorder. Click Start>Programs>Accessories>Entertainment>Sound Recorder. Now click File>Open, and go to C:\Windows\Media,where we saved the wav. Click on the wav and choose open. (You will notice the name has changed slightly. It will have a "[1] next to it, this is ok.) | | 7. Now click File>Properties and we will begin to compress that huge wav...... | | | 8. Click ConvertNow................ ....................................................... | | | 9. Here is where you can experiment after you have some practice and hear what the song sounds like after you have compressed it. For now, we will use a safe setting.click on the dropdown arrow for Format and choose MPEG Layer-3. | | | 10. Click the dropdown arrow for Attributes, and choose 20kBit/s, 11,025 Hz, Stereo. This will produce a nice size and a nice sound. Click ok.(This may take some time, don't be alarmed if things slow down or seem to stop responding, this is normal.) | | | 11. Almost finished. Once you do this a couple of times, it will become easier for you. On Sound Recorder, click File>Save As....You may choose any name you wish. Click save. | There is one more step to do to finish this process. If you don't like the way it sounds or the file size, repeat steps 9 & 10 above, but choose different Attributes properties. Once you have the song the way you want it, delete the original, as it is probably around 50 or 60 MB. That's all there is to this process. Congrats, you now can convert your mp3's to wav's suitable for chat or any other application. ©luvbug Computing Solutions Center 2001, 2002, 2003 |
