The following pages constitute what are considered the key, fundamental works that led to, or became the foundation of our Constitutional Republic. The principles embodied in older texts, such as the Magna Carta, were used by the framers. The "trial runs" of the Annapolis Convention and Articles of Confederation proved noble, but weak attempts to build our nation. Yet these first steps laid the groundwork, and trained those who met in 1787 to hammer out a new government form that not only worked, but led to the most prosperous nation in the history of the world.
Enjoy these enriching reads, as you build your understanding of our American system of governance.
