New Weight Records set and Mark Stead features in the Birmingham Evening Mail!
Well I told you so in last year’s 2005 issue of the clubs Newsletter, that the 3rd. Bye was the contest for the record breakers and it did not disappoint at Manor Farm Leisure on a sunny and hot day on 16 July 2006. New member Peter Walker amassed a new record shattering weight of 91LB.6ozs.8drm to beat Pete Grant’s record set in 2005 at the prolific Barbourne Pool. Runner up Roy Cook also produced his own personal best match weight with 90LB. 3ozs.
Little did we know that this new ‘All Time’ weights record was to last a mere 14 days, when it was broken yet again with a plus ton weight coming from none other than the brilliant Barbourne Pool on the Summer Scramble contest on 30 July.
Mark Stead who held the Corks record weight from 1999 to 2000, weighed in a magnificent weight of 104LB.13ozs 8drm. to shatter the record and be the first Corks ‘TON-UP’ member. Two other members also broke Peter Walker’s 14 day record, with runner-up and past record holder Pete Grant finishing the 5 - hour event with 97LB.11ozs.8drm and Peter Walker again showing his stillwater expertise with another 90LB.plus weight of 92LB.5ozs.8drm.
In fact these two consecutive contests amassed a grand total weight for all competitors of 1,750LB. plus of fish!!
This 'TON UP' achievement by Mark featured in the Birmingham Evening Mail on Wednesday - 9 August 2006 in Gareth Purnell's weekly fishing feature "Hook, Line & Sinker". It was the third year running that the Corks had featured in the Mail from the prolific Barbourne Pool.
It is interesting to note, when you consider that in Gareth's article there were only 4 features published from the 100's of Midland results and that the Corks made one of them, you can get a perspective of Mark's marvellous catch!
I wonder how long this new record will stand for??

A message to the Membership from an old friend
Hi, Barry, (E-Mail recieved 2 September 2006)
What a suprise. I happened to meet up with Cookie on my last visit up to Brum and very soon found myself talking with him about the good old days we'd spent together with the other guys in the Corks fishing club.
I was so sorry to hear of Jim's passing, please accept my belated condolances. I still remember with fondness the incident of the Blue Shark and the unique rod-rest he donated one time. It is incidents like these and others like the book of cartoons we produced ( I still have that by the way) that are the memories I retain of the 15 or so years I spent as a member of the best fishing club I've belonged to.
These are the things that I miss most of all. Although the life here in Bridport can't be any better than it is, I still miss the crack that occured before and after the contests. I've found a freshwater angler among all these ' salty water types', and we go out as often as work allows. We've found a couple of venues locally that are quite good and so far, my biggest carp has been 15lbs although there are some a deal bigger just waiting for me!.
Please keep updating the Corks web-pages so I can keep up with all news, and also see just how old your'e all getting!
Remember me to all the boy's who know me,
Tight Lines ,
Steve Bartlett.
