How to Think About Weird Things: Critical Thinking for a New Age

By Theodore Schick, Lewis Vaughn.
written in 1999

This book offers a pretty good foundation for critical thinking.

Chapter 1 - Close Encounters with the Strange
Chapter 2 - The Possibility of the Impossible
Chapter 3 - Looking for Truth in Personal Experience
Chapter 4 - Relativism, Truth, and Reality
Chapter 5 - Knowledge, Belief, and Evidence
Chapter 6 - Evidence and Inference
Chapter 7 - Science and It's Pretenders (includes a good discussion on creationism)
Chapter 8 - How to Assess a "Miracle Cure"
Chapter 9 - Case Studies in the Extraordinary

You may have better luck going to the bookstore to pick this up - I waited for two weeks with Amazon, and it never did become available.

Evolution & The Myth of Creationism

By Tim Berra.

It's not just a cool title - It's a very good book as well.

Title: Evolution & The Myth of Creationism (link to Amazon.com)
Author: Tim Berra
ISBN# 0-8047-1770-2

Looks like you can pick up both new and used copies for at, or under, $12.00

The book was written in 1990, so some of the information is a little dated - specifically the section on Human fossils, but with the continual discovery of new fossils in that area, it's not surprising.  Other than that, however, the book is fantastic!

One thing I found particularly interesting was the discussion of proteinoid microspheres (aka: "protocells") - Relevant to the formation of the first cells.

The Book Your Church Doesn't Want You to Read

By Tim Leedom.
Very good book on the history, origins, problems, etc. with several different religions.

Major Sections in the Book include:
Origins of Religion
Other Religions
Dead Sea Scrolls
The Bible
Jesus
Doctrine
Consequences
Fundamentalism Now
Church & Society
Think for Yourself

Definitely worth a read, no matter what side of the fence you sit on.

The Demon Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark

By Carl Sagan.
Absolutely Incredible!

Chapter #2, "Science & Hope", may be the best chapter of any book I've read - ever!

I'm on the verge of being speechless.  Carl Sagan is such an incredible writer.  I can't remember the last time I read a skeptical, science book, and was damn near brought to tears.

What's so cool about Carl is that he really seeks to understand.  The first part of the book deals pretty heavily on UFO's - But he doesn't dismiss UFOlogists as cranks or nuts.  Instead, he tries - and you get the sense that he really tries, to understand what the hell is going on!  What could possibly convince these people - some extremely intelligent by any definition of the word, that aliens are real, and that abductions are taking place?

I honestly had to re-examine my lack of patience with such claims, and came to the realization that there is something to be learned from these claims.  What the hell it is - I have no idea - but Carl convinced me that it's worth looking into.

Another revelation:  The method of science is more important than the product of science.  Wow!  I had never thought of it quite like that!

If you don't read any other skeptical book - read this one.

I liked it so much, I think I'll read it again!

Faith, Reason, and Earth History: a Paradigm of Earth and Biological Origins by Intelligent Design

By Leonard Brand.
Ecologist and paleontologist Brand (PhD Cornell 1970 - PaleoBiology) makes the most scholarly case for the young age (Biblical) creationary model via "Informed Intervention" and catastrophic geology.

Being a professor and an experienced researcher, Brand is well qualified, and it shows in the depth of coverage this book offers. Loaded with examples, diagrams, and drawings, this book is easily comprehended.

A truly humble man, Brand takes a constructive, model-building, and Christ honoring approach. No disrespectful evolution bashing here... just sound reason guided by revealed truth.
