Moebius Scarf and Hat Set

© Enfys 2005 - 2006

Materials
300g DK yarn, 6.50 mm hook and tapestry needle (for sewing in ends).

Tension
Using a 6.50 mm hook and DK used double, 11 sts and 13 rows to 10 cm (4 in).

Notes
The instructions given are for an adults size hat and scarf.  You can omit some of the increasing rows on the hat and reduce the starting chain on the scarf for a child size.  If altering the size in any way, make sure that the total number of dc’s are divisible by 3 for the pattern round (15 on hat and 5 on scarf) to work.

Scarf
A moebius is a mathematical shape which has only one side and only one edge.  As a result. Every time you work one round of this scarf you add two rows to the width.  This may sound complicated but in actual fact it is very simple to produce this effect - and with out sewing up seams!

Starting Chain: Chain 150, taking care not to twist, slip stitch together to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, dc in each chain to end,
Lay the work flat, then flip the left side over so that the starting chain lays at the top,
Working in the unused loops of the starting chain,  continue with a dc in each  ch.
When you reach the end of the chain, ss to 1st ch of row 1, turn.  (300 sts)
You will see that although you have only worked one round, you have 2 rounds width.
Rnds 2-4: Ch 1, dc in each dc, ss to 1st ch, turn.
Rnd 5: Ch 3, ss in 2nd ch from hook, dc in next dc, turn, ch 1, dc in dc, dc in ss, turn, ch 1, (place marker in last ch worked), dc in next 2 dc, (1 block made) *ch 1, working in  dc on row 14,  miss next 2 dc, dc in next dc, turn, ch 1, dc in next dc, dc in next ch, turn, ch 1, (place marker in last ch worked), dc in next 2 dc,** rep from * to ** to last 2 dc, ss to 3rd ch, ss in ends of rows of 1st block, turn.
Rnd 6: Ch 1, dc in marked ch of 1st block, *2 ch, dc in marked ch of next block,**  2 ch, ss to 1st ch, turn.

Rnds 8-12: Ch 1, dc in each dc, ss to 1st ch, turn.
